Austin salvage yards?

I could use some 'junk' parts, and y'never now what you find you just must have when digging through a junkyard, but I've just returned to Texas after a ten-year absence, and before, I lived in Dallas, which has Jefferson for junkyard nirvana.

Austin, though, is new territory for me, and I've found I rarely get an accurate answer over the phone, so are there places I should visit?

I'm specifically looking for '86-'91 W126 sedan parts, interior and exterior.

Thanks!

Austin junk yards

The only places I found worth going to are out 183 south about 15 miles or so past the airport.

For some reason they are all on one side of the road. Get out the Austin phone book and see what is out there. I think that if you pass "Pop's" then you have passed the last one.

Sadly, due to the price of land in Austin, there are really no good yards for the DIY types. The ones out on 183 are sort of hit and miss when it comes to Mercedes.

There used to be a number of good yards north of Waco on I-35, but they seem to be drying up as well. The little yards, I mean. The big yards are still there. If you know the area I am talking about then you know what I mean, and it might be worth the drive if you just want to see what they have.

There is a pick and pull type of yard in San Antionio on the south side of town that is pretty good for older (1990 and before) Mercedes, but you have to walk a bit to get back into where the Mercedes are. It is a nice place with a great parking lot, though, and the prices are very fair.

There is really nothing to compare to Jefferson Street. I have been going there since 1964 and it just keeps getting better! If you get up to Grand Prairie check out a yard just north of the Trinity River on MacArthur (which used to be Meyers Road) as he sometimes has some interesting cars in there.

Not really a junk yard, but I drove past a shop with lots of old MBs on the property serving as parts cars. It was off of FM973 close to the 71 just passed the Colorado River. I don't know if they'll let you pick parts, but I got some cooling system stuff from there.

In Austin Auto Haus on Sagebrush st. off N. Lamar and German Star one street north on McPhaul st. Neither is a salvage yard as such but both have many old MBs in various states of disrepair.

Oh how time flies. The shop that I referenced is called Mother Earth Mercedes and they are off of FM973 just southeast of the airport.

I also found a place called Wrench-A-Part a little further east on the 71 in Del Valle. They have an online inventory that lets you see what's available. Been there twice and they had 3 W202s, a W140 and 3 post 90 W124s.
