Contact Vera at 1-361-854-1955. He is the head mechanic at Ed Hicks Mercedes. He has his own shop and charges 1/2 what MB charges. Ed, the MB parts man at Ed Hicks, will set you up as a dealer which will save you 40% or so on spares. Very easy guy to deal with.

For front end alignment go to Rene's Wheel Alighment 2821 Ayres St. 361-882-5505. He does all the alignment for the local Mercedes dealer.

It's a bit of a drive, but the best MB guru in the Valley (Yes, I know CC is on the Coastal Bend, not the Valley) is Larry Egbert, owner of Egberts in McAllen 956-383-2181. The best, and well worth the couple of hours drive.

Yes, larry knows his stuff and has every part imaginable, probably way more than the dealer stocks.

You can get a manual at your local dealer. Next time, start an all new thread instead of tacking an off topic question onto an old thread. You're lucky someone saw this.

Are they still under the same ownership? I tried calling them last week to discuss work on a '83 300SD (IP timing adjust) and got a "deer in the headlights" response over the phone just by mentioning diesel. Finally the person just said that they didn't know how to work on 80's cars.

From the one phone call they sound like someone I wouldn't even trust with an oil change.

who did you talk to? There are only 3 people that work there. A secretary and two mechanics. sounds very strange to me.

A female - I guess the secretary. She kept putting me on hold to speak to one of the mechanics. Then she stated that they can't work on older cars.

The conversation was very strange. I checked the call log to make sure that I called the correct place. The only excuse I could come up with in my head is that the place had been sold.

I've been slowly training a mechanic at NA Auto in McAllen how to do the repairs and they are fair enough to not change me for their schooling time but I was looking for someone that can do repairs that I've never done before.

Do they do work on your 240D?

He has tinkered with it and done some little stuff for me. That is so strange. Ive seen plenty of old diesels there. In fact he has two that he drives all the time. There is also a yard full of them there. He works on them all of the time as well. Maybe they are busy. I was there last week. You must've spoke with letty. They are all a little on the strange side. I deal with larry directly, he is a really nice knowledgable guy who is always willing to explain or show me stuff when i go in with questions. Mainly i buy parts from him since he has just about everythying under the sun in stock. Im sorry to hear about your bad experience. I do have another friend of mine who works on them here in mcallen at his shop but he is currently without employees so it would take him a while to get it in and out and he isn't very cheap, which larry isn't either. I can forward his contact info to you if you would like.

I've got the main office number. From your reply I am assuming that I can just ask for him. I misunderstood an earlier post. I read it as if there was different contact info.

I would not ask for him, he is always busy. I would simply let Letty know what it is that you needed done and ask her to have him give you a call when he has a chance.

Update - By asking for Larry directly I was able to get an appointment. They acted as if it was no big deal. Unfortunately they're booked solid until January for non-emergency repairs (they take off 2 weeks for Christmas). I'll give them a try.
