1966 Mercedes Benz 250se Coupe in DB268 Blaugrun w/ Congac Optional electric sunroof & 4 on the floor

1966 Mercedes Benz 250se Coupe in DB268 Blaugrun w/ Congac Optional electric sunroof & 4 on the floor
I purchased this '66 W111 250SE Coupe in down town San Francisco in April 1992. I had been searching for a coupe with 4 on the floor and electric sliding roof, so it was love at first site.

The seller stated it couldn't be driven for more than 30min before it would shut down and not restart. None of the shops he'd taken it to could solve the issue. However, after purchase, I drove it the 230mi home without incident. A few weeks later the problem occurred, and I discovered a 1/2" thick layer of crud packed into the screen inside the inlet fitting of the electric fuel pump. A few weeks after the purchase the head gasket blew at speed out on the freeway. Turns out it had had some engine work done and the head bolts were never re-torqued. Within weeks of that incident, the transmission bearings failed locking the transmission in 2 gears at once in the middle of the street. So, I rebuilt the transmission! Not long after that, I installed the complete rearend from 1972 280 4.5. This lowered the rpms on the freeway by approximately 800 revs.

In 2008, I decided to tackle the cause of the huge blue cloud of smoke that had always been produced on start up. While attempting to replace the valve stem seals "in-car" I discovered the #3 exhaust guide was snapped off flush with the head. That led to removal of the head, and discovering corrosion damage. I had a spare head and had that completely rebuilt.

It may look good in photos, but it is poor shape. There is a lot of rust, and the paint and interior are cheap redo's.

Since purchasing it, I've done the following:
- rebuilt the transmission
- replaced the head gasket
- replaced the front sub-frame mounts
- rebuilt the fuel pump a couple of times
- installed the rear axle assembly from a '72 4.5 V-8 car for lower rpm's on the highway.
- installed the German headlamps
- installed the Hella driving lights (the Hella's are currently mounted in the holes where the turn signals use to be so they are too high and don't look that great. I'll eventually mount them lower).
-Replaced the middle muffler and front exhaust pipes
-Replaced the chrome exhaust tips
-Replaced the brake hoses and pads front and rear
-Replaced both rear upper bumperettes and the trunk trim between the tail lights
-Replaced both tail lights
-Replaced the coolant hoses, t-stat, and fan clutch.
-Had the radiator rodded out
-Replaced the ball studs, ball sockets and bushings for the fuel injection linkage
-Had the cylinder head rebuilt
-Disassembled and repaired the headlight switch
-Disassembled and repaired the sunroof motor
-Disassembled and repaired the wiper motor
-Removed, disassembled, and repaired the wiper transmission and spindles

The car was originally DB268 Blaugrün, but at some point was repainted a very light metallic green, and then repainted in it's current color which is lighter and greener than the Blaugrün....more like a British Racing Green. The paint and bodywork are terrible.

At some point during one of these "repaints" the car's leather seat upholstery was replaced with a very cheap vinyl, and cheap carpets. I've since had the seats upholstered in a nicer vinyl that looks similar to the "cognac" the car was done in originally. Wish I could afford the correct leather interior and velour carpets. The wood defroster bows and windshield bows are delaminating now.

She's a rusty old gal that's had a horrible previous life, but I love her and she's mine. Would love to do a full restoration some day, but for now I just try to keep up with the maintenance, keep her dry, waxed and enjoy driving her.

sms560 Love a w111 cars mine was a stick but no sunroof I have another one this one is in process it is a automatic with air but no sunroof again if you go on YouTube and put in 1966 Mercedes blue 250 coupe t is the one that’s on the turn table spinning around if you ever want to talk my email is sms560@yahoo.com. Great car you have there 04-27-2020
Tony H Wow-you are really motivated! It's really enjoyable hearing about someone enjoying their car. The 111 coupe is really the only car I want to own maybe other than a 350SL 3.5 4speed. I bought my 111 coupe in San Francisco also. Garage sounds nice. 03-11-2020
Todd Miller Well, it's Feb.2020 and after some sort of 11yr time warp, I just pulled the car out of storage in Jan. 2019, built a 20x40 metal garage for it and my other toys over the summer, and have started back to working on the coupe again. It is much worse off than it ever was, due to my poor storage of it, so I now have a bit of work in front of me. Currently addressing all the mechanical issues, and then will move on to the serious cosmetic work. 02-29-2020
ruchase Despite the issues, it looks good and kudos to you for keeping it alive when many others would have sent this beauty to the wreckers. 08-12-2015
oldsinner111 Its beautiful to me 03-26-2011
Beastie I have to be honest. I am not squinting and it still looks good !

earthtokent That would be a dream combo for me: 111 coupe with a stick shift and sunroof, dark green with cognac. Okay, I'm a little jealous.... Enjoy! 12-14-2009
thebenzbar It's still a nice 111 coupe, so keep enjoying your gal... I recently acquired the same model & year as yours and it surely is an instant love affair! 12-05-2009
ChrisSporty Todd, Great work! Hang on to it. You may want to treat the rust areas with POR15 if they are out of sight. This should seize the rust from spreading until you can get her done right. I did this to my old jag and it works great at holding the trouble spots at bay. Great photos too, no matter what she'll always be a "Benz".
Enjoy and thanks for sharing.

Patrick_NZ I used to have a (right hand drive) 1966 250SE 66 coupe too, exactly the same colour as yours! BRG.... Drove it across France plastered with Rhodesian stickers (just so the locals wouldn't think I was a Brit...) and it performed magnificently. Get pangs when I look at your photos 11-16-2008
RML That is a beautiful car. I would feel proud to drive it. Keep er humming. Is that Highway 1 in the background? I believe I remember driving by there a few years ago when I was on the west coast. 07-29-2008
minimike1 Todd,
are you the same Todd Austin America guru?

JimmyL Looks as good from the front as any MB you will see. The best looking Euro lights I could imagine. Good looking ole girl from a distance. Fight the rust! 12-21-2007
Todd Miller Thanks for all the kind words! Right now the goal is to keep it dry and clean, enjoy it as is, and then when the day comes, restore it for real.

To Jim B., thanks for the concern. The plate has been that color since 1991.
12-03-2007
Dee8go Yeah, it looks very nice in your pictures. I'm partial to coupes and that's a veru nice-looking one. 12-03-2007
Jim B. A classic coupe. The California 2 series black plate is illegally painted and you will get busted for it though. 11-17-2007
Jengasan it will always be stunning - keep it and cherish it, I'd give a limb for one - think 'exclusivity' 11-02-2007
Wodnek Its sometimes a tough call. Restore or just drive and enjoy... 11-01-2007
Wodnek Thats one that an unreputable dealer could take 50 pics and put on ebay and get big money for. The pictures make it look great. 11-01-2007
