I used to use one of those all the time in engineering while in high school. You can make fully working prototypes with it. I made a 4 stroke engine with valves and all, just for fun.

Aren't those sometimes called prototypers? I used to read CADD magazine when I was using Autocad in my job and I recall seeing ads for them.
