Smart car gets punted

The spin just caught me as entertaining, mostly since I would never drive one.

I'd be more interested to know if the person in the Smart was injured or not.

Well, the IIHS report states that the dummy's head hit the steering wheel through the airbag on their same test, and given the amount of footwell intrusion I'd say survivability is low.
The smart car got top ratings in it's class, but mainly because it's the only vehicle in it's class available in the US. All the articles seem to flaunt the "top of it's class" line, but when you read them they dance around the fact that it's really not a safe car. No crumple zone to speak of, and in the side impact test the doors popped open.

I had to laugh at the star flying- It looks like it was thrown.

Fortunately, in the US, few cars are as large or heavy as the C Class...

Love to see Silverado v. Smart in the same test. You'd need a shovel to remove the Smart from the scene.

Did anyone notice the people standing above the C class as it entered the area? I'm amazed they allowed people that close to the action where shrapnel was really flying around.

Hardly any consolation to the Smart but check out the Camry vs. Yaris.

Accord vs. Fit

Just curious, how does the IIHS obtain cars for testing? Are they randomly purchased or are the manufacturers required to supply a certain number in order to get approval?

Aside from getting punted, you can see from the camera mounted on the inside behind the driver that it seems like there was no intrusion into the cockpit of the Smart.

Here's a surprisingly good endorsement for the Smart.

I thought the Fit did quite well against the Accord.

Looked like it did. The Yaris was kind of frightening, though. And it's quite a bit larger than the Smart.

The S class threw it a few yards, I'm sure say an F350 or Excursion would be able to make a field goal with one.

The scary part is that the people inside will be shaken around like a hampster in a plastic ball!

Exactly...

Just the gee forces from being stopped, reversed, and spun will probably kill you no matter how many airbags the car has...
