New Guy, new project, 1952 220A
Hello to Everybody from Texas!
It looks like I am inheriting a project vehicle from my uncle. He doesn't have the time or interest in finishing the restoration. I'm reasonably mechanical and have a decent shop with some good tools. I've worked on everything from computers to boats to motorcycles, cars and mostly old trucks! my biggest project so far: http://www.thedreyerfamily.com/69f250/67f250/67project.htm What I know from my uncle so far: 1952 220 Cabriolet "A". The car was finished 18 April 1952 and delivered 22 April 1952. It was black with brown leather upholstery and a brown top. Becker radio. Sold through the Dusseldorf dealer. quoting uncle "Somewhere I read that they only produced 236 of these in 1952; in 1953 they produced 403." I belive the car is mostly complete, althought the body and chassis are currently in 2 states! The convertible top will be one of the bigger challenges. Let me know if you guys have any good resources for parts and information or any other advise! Greg |

Welcome aboard Greg. There are folks here who know an awful lot about the oldies who can probably help you, although the production number being so low might prove the source of some frustration. Sounds like a neat project, be sure to take plenty of digital pictures so the rest of us can dabble in the job vicariously.

I can tell you my work will be well documented on the web! I found a similar forum to this for the old Fords and that turned out to be a great way to get advise. My truck project has probably hundreds of pages posted to the web.
I'll probably get the 220 body tomorrow, and I'll put up a preliminary page soon. |

The Mercedes buyer's guide says that the production amounts are:
1951-1953 978 units chassis prefix 187012 1954-1955 300 units chassis prefix 187024 From the book: The car is one of the last to have a wooden body. A 220 Cabriolet A is pretty, a sort of scaled-down 300S but friendlier. The Cabriolet A is the most valuable 220 today. Economy and good cruising performance from the 80hp engine are reasons to choose this as an only collector car. If you want a collectible for tours and club outings, this is your 220. The photos of that type of car look very fine!

Any suggestions for parts sources?
Particularly for the wood pieces? Do restorers typically replace the wood with something else, fiberglass or aluminum etc? I'll be going lter this week to retrieve the car/parts. I am eager to see what is missing. |
