My 6.3 is finally on it's way

The driver (who is turning into a real git) picked it up along with my Rover P6 and Ford F100.

When they tried to load the 6.3, it caught fire! I was told that it ran super rich but this should be fun!

If anyone knows anything about the 6.3 injection system, please feel free in pointing me to the right direction.

Ah, yes. I have made a detailed study of the 6.3 injection system and I can tell you definitively that it is not supposed to catch fire.

Sorry, Alabbasi, please don't me!

I wish you great luck and success on your 6.3. I hope you have a car that turns out to just need a "turn" of the mixture screw!

Yeah, I don't think they let it burn for too long :-) I'm sure it's fine. I'm more worried about the roof. The car was once fitted with an aftermarket sun roof. So the PO cut the roof out and installed a roof from a none sunroof car. I'm interested to see what the work looks like. Jim, my mechanic in Atlanta helped me load the other cars. He told me that it looked fishy

If you wanna come get Henrietta and take her away you can cut her whole roof off (it was you that suggested THAT in the first place) and have a lovely factory sunroof... I have the backup tool that open it manually as well.

I'm sorry your car caught fire, Al - I hope its minor. Damn.

What a day, All three cars arrived today and what a mission it was to pull them into the shop.

First of all, the hauler that arrived was a 6 car hauler. It was configured with three up and three down. The pickup truck and the Rover were up and the Mercedes was down.

The Rover had a broken parking pin and the brakes were very weak. As a result, the driver made me get in car and roll it off. I was scared out of my whits! As soon as he let the chain loose, the car started rolling and fortunately with enough pedal pressure I was able to hold it.

The pickup truck has non servo brakes so it was all me. I was confident in the drums though because I rebuilt pretty much every component of that brake system.

Lastly was the 300SEL. Unfortunately the brakes seized during the trip and we could get the car off the trailer. We had to get a wrecker to back up to the trailer and winch the car off. Because the car was on wooden blocks (air suspension car), It tore up the muffler and the fuel tank got beaten up on the trip down because of the steep gradient.

Once the car was of the trailer, the driver was gone!

This left me with a car in the middle of a drive and no way of getting it into the shop.

After scratching my head for about an hour, I decided to jack the car up on it's diff and attempt to turn the wheels. The left rear was very stiff and the right as frozen solid. So I pulled the wheel off and removed the caliber (I had to break the steel lines to get it off)

After putting the wheel on, I still couldn't move the car so I jacked up the front, they would move, but were very very stiff.

I thought the best way to do this was to pull the car back and line it up using a tow rope and my 280SEL 4.5. Not only did it work, but it unfroze the calipers. I was able to roll the car up to the garage with some effort but on my own.

I got it into the garage, but because the garage door is small, the pickup truck had to go in at an angle and I couldn't get around it. I thought I was being clever by trying to jack the truck up at the diff and sliding it across. It fell off the jack and landed on the fender of the 6.3 leaving a small dent and scratch just behind the light. It's fixable, but very annoying.

There was no way I was going to be able to steer this car and roll it into the garage without help. Fortunately Paul Kepner (a member of the W108 group) came to my rescue in his sweet SIII XJ6 and we managed to get the car in.

I didn't bring my camera with me, but shot some pictures on my cellphone.

I spoke to the mechanic at the other shop where the car was collected and he told me that the car did catch fire because they used too much either when they tried to start it. We put it out quickly and there does not seem to be any apparent damage. He said that the only reason it caught is because of the either and it should be fine. I do know however that the FI needs work. The whole car needs work.

Anywhere I'm beat, here are some pictures.

Whoever did the roof did a pretty decent job of welding it in. I couldn't tell from the outside that the roof was welded and it looks like its pretty well stitched from the inside. I think I'll leave it.

Ann, on your car, I would love to take your car, I could really use a parts car but in all honesty, I would advise that you take what you need and then send the car to the pull a part and help save 6 or 7 other W108's.

I think before I get started on this car, i either need to thin the heard, or get a bigger space. I have too many "projects" right now and no space.

Al,

Have you ever had an easy time getting cars to your house?

My problem is always getting rid of them. It's hard to let them go once you spend all that time and effort restoring them.

I'll never forget the advice Benzcrusher once gave. "Pull the change out from beneath the rear seat and crush 'em".

It seems like I never learn. I was looking at some of the older pictures of my W108 when I first bought it. It was seriously rough, but looks very familiar to the 6.3 that I have now. Here a picture from when I first got it. It even had a black top.

I know a guy, In Phoenix, Az with two of those cars. One of them, has light front end damage. The other is really nice. The prices, are very good, and I knwo you'd appreciate a couple, or atleast one more, rust free original Arizona car...I can foreward you his info, if youare interested. He's really nice, and very honest about his cars. he'll send you pics, and answer all of your questions. Just let me know, if this interests you.

Regards, Nick

Hey Nick

As much as I would love to, one 6.3 is enough for me right now. This body is rust free and solid.

Thanks for the lead, if things change, I will certainly get in touch with you.

Well, The guy is not at all agressively selling the cars, and I'm sure they aren't going anywhere any time soon as a result. He's taking offers and such, but no-one is offering...We are a certain breed, and few and far in between.
He's bit off of the beaten path, so noone even sees the cars where they are, and they're in-doors. He's not hard up for space, by any means either. So I'd bet that even a year from now, neither one of them will have found a new home. He'd just assume keep them, if nobody comes along with an interest. He will just maintain them, and occasinally drive around a little...Last year, he had front and rear glass seals put in, just because he saw a little bit of water come through when washing the better of the two... At the same time though, they're not expensive, when someone does show an interest..see? So Have no fear, and take your time. If you remember this in a year, and are looking for one, just ask me, or check the archives, and I'll give you the lowdown, an up-date, and his info. AHH, forgot the best part, Klause, or however you spell his name, is a German Immigrant, and a very good mechanic as well. I'm sure he knows what he's doing when he works on them.

Regards-Nick
