1952 220b Cabrio on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2494048906&category=6329

Parental warning: don't look at these pictures if the effects of weather, neglect and a plain old undeserving owner upset you!!

It's in my town so if any of you have more nerve, money and patience than I do I'll look at it for you. What a shame to see such a once-beautiful car be neglected this badly. It makes me want to cry.

Just for the helluvit, I've tossed a low bid on the jallopy myself. With 1966 engine and tranny installed at Stuttgart what could possibly go haywire?

Could be wrong, but I dont believe for one minute that MB "converted" the 1952 gasoline engine to run on diesel, so we can assume it's got the same engine as the 110 Haeckflossen, although the 220D actually didnt appear until 115's made their debut.

But here's what I'd like to know:

1) Will the car roll on its wheels or is it propped up with cinder blocks?

2) Frame rusted out or will it support the weight of the car?

3) What happens when you push the pedals (brakes & clutch)?

4) Any chance the engine has not seized?

5) Since the seller says the car was running when he was age 13 yr - how old is the seller today?

Cat, you dont have to put yourself through the pain and horror of finding answers to these 5 questions as yet. The auction has another 6 days and my budget is already strained to the max.... But I'm thinking this '52 is probably one of the easiest MB's in the world for roadworthy mechanical restoration - given that many parts through 110's and 115's are likely to match. Heck, the car's brand new engine and gearbox alone can fit anything up until and possibly beyond 1976.

I'll keep my eye on it till it gets closer to the end date.
I think it would be a fantastic car for someone with a lot
of time and money (neither of which describe me!).

Wow, I'm absolutely flabbergasted - the winning bid was $11,100 and I guess the two people who wanted it were really going at it. I sure wish I were a millionaire, 'cause that's what it's going to take to restore this poor tub.

That's poor ebay bid technique in action there. Just cause were all friends here, the ebay bidding method I prefer is to not bid at all, and use an outside service like http://www.esnipe.com. Esnipe will make your bid for you in the last seconds of the auction, for your specified amount. It's like thirty or forty cents per bid or something like that. Eliminates all the early auction jockeying that drives up the price needlessly. AND you don't have to wait around your computer all day to place a last minute bid. Worth a look-see.

And as far as this auction, I am moving all my vehicles out into the elements immediately to maximize both exposure and resale value.

Milllionaire rich man?? High dollar restoration??

Nonsense says me! Elbow grease is all the car needs..... Amortize $11G over seven year period plus whatever dough goes into 2nd hand Ponton/Adenauer/Haeckflossen bits and/or parts car(s) and the hobby is cheaper than playing golf or sailing a yacht.

We all know that practically *anything* from Ponton/Adenauer/Haeckflossen might fill the bill for parts supply - so what's the problem? Otherwise, leaf springs tuned for transverse mount front suspension can be gotten from truck parts manufacturer, and Ponton/Haeckflosse kingpin & bilstein upgrade could be feasable too. That's my motiffe - build a Benz with MB parts even 12 yrs apart then call it 'kosher' and drive the car everyday.

Dang it, I'm dyin here at the trailer park after driving truck to Ohio last night. Practically keeling over and dropping dead thinkin what i could do with that 220 Cabrio-B.
