????1973-280se
I know the book does not show Mercedes building a 280SE in 1973(114 chassis). This car has a 280SE emblem on the trunk and it had a 280-110 dual overhead cam engine. It is all electric and very nice bumper mounted fog lights...On the pillar is 250/8. Could Mercedes have built a 280 SE in 1973????The VIN Number is 114 060 12 013907 thank you..Jim

I don't believe so. W114/115's were never "S" types. Additionally, to the best of my knowledge, the M110 engine had only dual Solex or Zenith carbs until '77 when it got the CIS Bosch K-jetronic injection system. Never heard of one having the earlier D-jetronic system or older mechanical system of the W108 280SE. Pehaps someone got ambitious with replacement badging. 1973 is about the time that the W116 was introduced, the new "S" type. There were 280SE among the W116's.

114.060 is a plain 280, but Euro version was a 250/8 , which had the 2.8
motor |

Agree. The 114's got the M110 in the US starting in 1973. I assume it has a 4 barrel Solex carb. If it has injection, it is a euro model, and significantly more valuable.

the euro w114 280E has the M110 with D jetronic (i should know, i have two of them...). ther was no such thing as a 280 SE in a w114 chassis.
230 250 280 250E? 280E 250 CE 280 CE 250's sometimes had a 2.8 litre engine, just to be confusing... m110 d jet =185 bhp guy

SE in '73 would be a W108/109 chassis, in 74 would have been a W116, but no US model had fuel injection on the M110 until 76.
However, I think the badges will fit.... The 280 W114 chassis was not fuel injected in the US, but I'd take a look -- if it has K-Jetronic (fuel distributor and metal lines to injectors), it's a later model engine installed in the '73 body. If it has D-jetronic (wires to the injectors with a metal line manifold), it's a euro spec '73. Either way, if it runs and isn't rusty, it's a nice car. Peter

That's the chassis number for a vanilla 280, the four door sedan. What mercedes these days calls the "C-class" (bottom of the line, "utility" car; suitable for a taxi). -CTH |

W114/115 chassis is the equivalent of the E class, not the C class -- the "baby Mercedes" was first born as the W201 in 1982 -- the W114/115 is the same size as the W124 and W123 chassis, being about 3200 lbs and same dimension, give or take a bit. The other "options" in those days were the S types (for heavy or large) and the limos (600 Grand from 1963 on). SLs don't count...
Whether or not the "baby mercedes" idea worked well is open to debate -- I presonally find them a bit small, and my friend the mechanic says they aren't as good a car, but he's a purist and there do seem to be huge numbers of them around. The C class isn't the car the W201 is, let alone the W108.... Peter
