Differential Swap

Is it realistic or even possible to swap the differential from a model 116, into a 107.044? If so, which models? I'm trying to avoid a ring/pinion replace/adjustment, and searching the self serv wreckers in my area for another differential. The difficulty I'm encountering is the coupes and convertibles are non existent at these yards, but they do get a number of sedans in from time to time. Thanks.

Maybe. Send me an email, and I will send you back the Model Survey, which has pictures. ctaylor739@aol.com

These come up on ebay occasionally.

You might also try ATVM (atvm2@prodigy.net) or TMC at 410 789 7896. You will have to pay shipping, but they probably have the goods.

sendtodoug, forget any gear swap (too difficult to get the pinion nut torqued right and bearings will fail or get noisy if it isn't EXACTLY right! don't ask me how I know.)
Have you called Silver Star Recycling in Rancho Cordova?
http://www.silverstarrecycling.com/
They may have some info on compatibility, but they also may charge you a dismantling fee (only fair I suppose but other places do not).
Also, you might consider going to a taller ratio (always nice if you have a strong engine) Here is some data, I hope this helps too:

R107
380SL,SLC RATIO 1:2.47

380SL,SLC,560SL RATIO 1:2.47 ABS

450SL,SLC RATIO 1:2.65

450SL,SLC RATIO 1:3.06

W116
280S,SE RATIO 1:3.69

300SD RATIO 1:3.07

450SE.SEL RATIO 1:3.06

450SE.SEL RATIO 1:2.65

response to Diesel Diehard

Thanks for the advice on the ring/pinion swap., and the gear ratio info. I get the impression you learned this the hard way.
As for Silver Star, I've been in there a couple of times, but not recently. I'll probably stop out there this weekend. They have been helpful in the past.
It's just that Pick-n-Pull is about 200 feet away, on the same road. ( 4 acres, just imports) and if you know what to look for, it pays to check there first.
