1976 240D oil leak

I drive a well-serviced 76 240D with a genuine 70,000 on the clock. Just lately it's started to leave a small oil puddle wherever it gets parked. Although I look after the car I'm no mechanic and wonder where to start. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

Andy

First thing, clean the engine for a better look. Then typical culprit is the oil filter mount that just needs tightening on its gasket at the engine block. Throwing down a large piece of cardboard might help you spot the leak.

First look at the air cleaner. If there's a plastic line coming from the vacuum pump, look in the air cleaner.

If there is an oil puddle in the air cleaner housing and the filter is saturated, you have a leak in the vacuum pump diaphram.

Being a 76 model, this is a 115 chassis, not a 123. I guarantee there is more than a puddle of oil in th air cleaner since it has an oil bath type air cleaner. Oil filter is under the engine, not on the side of the block. It's possible that the oil filter could be a leak point, say, if the O-ring is pinched or if the filter bolt is not tightened sufficiently.

You will need to locate the source of the leak first. Clean the engine up as best you can, and get under it and see if you can trace back to the source of the leak. Once we know the source of the leak we can decide how to fix it.

Correct, 240 on the 123 started in 77?

The discharge from the vacuum pump goes directly into the intake manifold on my 115.

My observation regarding the vacuum pump related oil leak would be valid on 240's and 300's on the 123 chassis using a vacuum pump with two lines.

The main culprit on my 76 240d has been the oil filter assembly if it is oil and the hand primer on the IP if it is fuel in the puddle.
Air filter, of course, is oil bath.
