Help my 1977 280E won't start this morn
I turned the key this am and heard "tika tika tika". No turnover at all. I hooked cables up to another battery and the same "tika tika tika". I assume this is a bad starter.
I heard you can wrap on the starter with a hammer and get a few more starts out of it,if the solenoid is stuck. this may save me towing if i choose to have the garage up the street replace it for me. My question is, is there any chance this could be the alternator? The reason I ask is that there are signs it is going bad. Is the alternator used during the first ignition turnover? I would hate to replace the starter and then turn around and replace the alt a day later.

The alternator isn't 'used' while starting. After the engine's started and running, the alternator supplies power to the electrical system and keeps the battery charged so it can start next time. If the starter won't crank, but just clicks with a good battery, it could be the starter or a bad or loose battery cable / ground cable.
Happy Motoring, Mark
