W116 280SE vs. 450SE

Has anyone on this Forum owned both a W116 450SE(L) and a W116 280SE? I am interested in the difference in driving behavior between the two. I'm assuming the 280SE feels under-powered/overworked and the 450SE "Strong like bull" but pretty thirsty. The 280's M110 w/ K-jetronic is no tea-totaller either.

Obviously, when shopping for one or the other, rust is the first concern. What other factors should be taken into account when considering one or the other?

Alex

I asked a similar question on the w116.org forum here.

I would love to know your impressions if you get a chance to drive both.

Australian w116 280sel

Hello I have a lwb 280 sel from 1978 in australia w116. the car is very slow around the city but once it is out on the open road you really appriciate the m110 motor. In my case it is the ability to own a well cared for mercedes but having the lux of not having to drive at a stop start daily commute every day. Stop start it will not pull the skin of kirdeled milk. but on the open road it is fantastic
