What is the Rear Diff in a 450SEL

Hey everyone,

Just like everyone we got snowed in but today I went on a drive and boy was it fun. I love this car and its stopping power in snow with 215s on it. BUT as any rear wheel drive car, I got almost stuck once and it got me thinking...What kind of diff is back there? It sure wasnt locking or giving any power to the side with traction so what could I do to fix this. Was this a locking diff until the parts worn out of it? If so could I just get the rebuilt kit and fix it?

Let me know,
Peter

i thought about mine in the snow and had this vision of a big green thing sliding dead sideways......

my diff is just a normal diff, no limited slip, if i'm turning right @full throttle when it shifts from 1-2 it just spins the right rear tire

Limited slip was an option most years, so you may or may not have it. It was standard on the 6.3/6.9L high performance models -- otherwise they eat right rear tires!

So does limited slip in the rear end wear out? How could I check if it was a limited slip or not and I was only able to spin snow out of my rear right tire, my left one didnt kick any up in the rear view mirror so does that mean anything?

I know it was only throwing snow on the right side when I got stuck and the left side was on wet concrete and should have been getting traction.
