280sel 4.5 fuel pump

Ever since I found that my fuel pump is leaking, I have been struggling to find a fix or an inexpensive replacment. So far I have found new ones from $415.00 up to ~600.00. No luck on repair kits. MB doesn't have repair parts available.

Has anyone successfully repaired a leaking pump. (It leaks on the discharge side) Or, a cheaper source of parts....maybe a lead on salvage parts?

tks much

fuel leak

greetings.

to not really know where the leak is, i'd suggest to check the change over adaptor. there is a dual threaded change over that comes out of the fuel pump body that converts to the steel line that runs up to the engine.

there is a metal washer (copper i think) to seal the change over threads comming out of the fuel pump body the change over to engine is self sealing.

as always be careful not to strip any threads.

Fuel Pump question / Theory

I was actually discussing this with my mechanic not so long ago. Is there a certain pressure that this pump runs on that is unique? I guess my question is why shouldnt a fuel pump from another car work?

At the suction side of the pump there is a plastic cap(?) that is held on by a couple of screws. Right under that there are several slots around the body of the pump.

Fuel sprays out of those slots under pressure whenever the pump is running so something on the discharge side is leaking and coming out those slots. It does not leak if the pump is not running so it sort of fools you unless you look with the ening on.

I don't have a pic readily available as I am in Trinidad for the next couple of weeks (work no play) but the Bosch P/N is E3000-95301. I will try to get a pic when I return home if it's needed.

Thanks for any help.

with the rx7's we use a couple of pumps that are external like the mb, either should work, with a little creativity on the mounting (different diameter can)

1st one is a pump from the 84-85 rx7 gsl-se, its the 1.3 liter fuel injected engine, runs about 40psi in the stock car, and will handle about 200hp. mazda part number is N304-13-350C, its available aftermarket for around $80

#2 is the pump out of any 80's cis (audi/vw) car, goes right into the 84-85 rx7's, and it will supply a tad more fuel. these are all gone from the junkyards, so they must go bad

#3 is the external pump from a 930 porsche, its the same from 79ish to now, they cost around $300new give you enough fuel for 400hp
