rear subframe mounts changed
I changed out the rear subframe mounts yesterday and had a question about whether I got the mounts 'seated' well enough. I am attaching a picture - too big a gap or does this look right? Before I changed them mine looked just like the ones in this post:

Just curious, what model got this repair, and did you notice a change in rear ride height, i.e. does it sit a bit higher in the rear with less sag?

It's a '72 250 - and yes, it looks a little higher to me, and doesn't ride as clunky in the rear end (although I haven't driven it much since I replaced them). I think I also need to replace the rear differntial mount.

Looks like you have 1/2" to go. If memory serves, when I did mine the flange was seated to the subframe.

How big a deal is it
to change the rear subframe mounts? I have a '73 280 and I think it needs them changed. I have a floor jack, jack stands...any other tools you need to do it? Thanks for any response.

There should be a wider gap between the bottom of the mount and the bracket because the mount is taller! I changed my mounts on the 300D and couldn't get the top of the mount to sit all the way against the unibody on one side. I left it sitting overnight with some all-thread and washers but there was still a gap (on the top). Besides, if you torqued it down according to spec, you are fine. Don't go overtorquing it and taking all the spring out of the rubber.
Tom, there is a sticky at the top of the Diesel discussion: BostnBenz or something that has links to DIY articles on the 123. The rear subframe mount link will work on your 114. I used it for mine and it worked! Yes, you definately need to replace the diff mount. The rear subframe is suspended by the two sub mounts and diff mount. Oh by the way, dont unbolt more than one sub mount at a time. Don't ask me how I know!

Tom,
Changing the mounts took a couple of hours - and part of that time was spent running to the hardware store to makeshift a mount puller. I followed the advice of someone on this board and at this link http://hsb.baylor.edu/html/easley/mercedes/welcome.html. Other than pulling the old mount from the subframe, the job was pretty simple. I still need to change the differential mount, and then I'm going to tackle the front end. Ryan
