1962 220 Sb Fintail

I am new to this on-line forum stuff - but after reading a bunch of your articles, seems like a good idea. Last year I was skiing with my girlfriend, now fiancee, and we ran across a 1962 220 Sb in BC, and I picked it up for about $1000 US. Brought it back to Vancouver, and have been playing with it ever since, mainly rebuilding. Stage one was the engine rebuild, all done, runs well for the most part, but I haven't yet done the head and ordered the valve seals ages ago... still waiting.

One thing I do need help with is the blower motor. When I got it, it ran, and then when I was driving around not too long ago, it just stopped and the light on the knob on the dash no longer is there either. I am not sure how to get in to look at it, and hopefully (!) don't have to pull the dash off. I have a couple of workshop manuals, one makes it look easy, and doesn't mention pulling the dash off. Can anyone help with this process, and also where to get the motor, assuming I need one (or is there any other motor I can supplement??).

Also, I need to get a drivers side door strap (the whole piece including the part in the door).

Thanks for the help!
Vancouverfinnie

Check with Phil here at Fastlane/PartsShop. You may want to call him. Online ,he doesn't have that much listed for the Fintails, but if parts are shared with later models, he can get them. Parts may still be availible through Mercedes but they're expensive. My '60 Fintail hasn't needed a blower yet, but the ones for the '70s W114/W115 models are now over $400! Before jumping into a replacement, you should check the fuse and trace the circuit with a 12 volt testlight.
If you do need to get to the blower motor, the heater assy comes out from under the dash. The plastic heater case becomes brittle with age so the brackets for the various control cables may crack or break off (if they haven't already). You may have to do additional reconstruction/fabrication repairs if you pull the heater.

Happy Motoring, Mark

That's actually a very good sign that the heater electric dial knob light is out..... I'd start with checking the switch before attacking the fan motor. Rule on Vintaqe MB electric switches, signal switches, instrument cluster lights, fuse boxes, etc is that they often just need cleaning with a brass brush and/or a pencil eraser to scrub the contacts.

Thanks for that - I will try the brass brush method on the blower switch first, hopefully that will work! Will also try it on the instrument cluster switch to get that working again for starters.

There is, or maybe was, a removable panel under the dash. Everything is accessable from under there. The dash pad covers sheet metal.

The heater box has some large clips to hold the covers on. It's a really simple car. Since it's a '62, there is also a flap in the engine compartment which can open to provide hot air from the engine compartment. This was deleted in 1963 with the 'phase 2' models.

There are lots of grease points in the front suspension, several on the driveshaft and two on the swing axle joint. Greasem up. Jiffy lube will hate you.

Or Jiffy Lube may just turn you away. My neighborhood 'Mieneke Lube-shop' refuses to work on any Mercedes!
