Crankshaft swap: M130
I have the 280SE M130 FI engine and was thinking of pulling the crankshaft from it, to replace the bad crankshaft in the M130 Carburetted engine.
The specs in the shop manual indicate the same bore and crankcase height, so it seems plausible. A co-worker mentioned the 'line-boring' process when these 2 engines were constructed. That could be an obstacle. Of course I'll keep track of all caps to put back in the same location. Other than turning both engines upside down to remove the crankshafts, anything else I should watch for?

I believe the flywheel is balanced to the crank on these engines, so you will probably need to swap the flywheel too, and make sure it goes on the exact same orientation! Other than that, make sure you don't switch around the bearings or, better yet, get a new set for the peace of mind that they'll give.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

Good point, Tom
This problem began with the fact the oil filter sealing ring (part # 44 ) was missing when I changed th oil filter. This missing part allowed the oil filter housing to contact the oil filter base, causing a cracked housing and loss of oil. Then the timing tensioner failed (or was that operator error ? )
So, I'm gonna at least try to do the swap, if the replacement crankshaft is within limits. Zero $ for this attempt. The alternative is to JB weld (epoxy) a new rod bearing to the cap to prevent spinning, but that would only work if I existed in a different Universe

Spare engine is out
I cut away and removed the W108 front end and chassis and it was simple. I removed the tranny (also a 'keeper') and flipped the engine upside down to remove the alloy oil pan. The pistons are frozen, but I removed the rod caps. Although this engine threw a rod, the crankshaft journal is still in spec and unmarked. Now I have to decide if it is really worth the effort to pull the W114 M130 engine and swap crankshafts. I will need to spend $$ on the main bearings too, and assorted gaskets. Decisions, decisions.

On my first Mercedes, which had thrown a rod also, I used the existing head and a block I picked up a supposed MB repair shop.
Altho everything bolted up fine, it turned out that the cam and crank were different enough to cause me no end of trouble. They were half a tooth off as far as timing marks go. I never did get it quite right. You probably won't have the same problem as they are both M130 engines, but if separated by enough years, who knows. Michael
