About valve bodies

I don't have any specific info on this. Most of the trans supplied with diesels start in 1st. I would recommend talking to ron at www.germanstar.net. He works with a shop in Texas that rebuilds valve bodies and may be able to help with finding the right valve body.

Possibly not a bad engine after all.

I went up to the local Benz dealer where my buddy is a mechanic to start buying some of the rebuild parts for the motor. I was told "STOP!!" by one of the head mechanics of the shop. Apparently, the vacuum pump diaphram is noted to going bad on these motors and will allow oil into the combustion chamber. I just thought that I might pass this bit of info along as it may save me thousands. I will pull that apart this weekend (should have the vacuum pump rebuild kit in from Germany by then) and let everyone know what I find. This is a pretty significant difference in cost... $60 vs. thousands...

W114's must be preserved!

Sometimes I feel like the 114 is the Benz no one cares about. But the more I drive/fix/ and get to know mine the better I feel about her. The big shame about these cars is the confounded rust!

In regards to Jonny and June's black 280, I have never seen a black 114. Anyone else? I swear I've seen every color under the sun but never black - of course the 108's and 123's around.

I am getting the feeling that here in America we 114 drivers continue to be a rare breed indeed.

I now always drop down for first gear start when my 280's dignity is threatened or a highway on ramp lyeth in front.

I have never seen a black one either

Hi MarksBlue280,

Mine is a strange "Carnelion Red" I think it's so old, the color is coming back in style.

I have to agree..the more I drive mine the more I like it. Did you happen to see the green coupe in last months Star mag? Awesome. If I can find a way to keep mine I will.

Yeah, a couple of us here have experienced the vacuum pump failure. There are actually two kits available to rebuild it, and you might as well do both. Check fastlane or ***************.

I posted my experience when I fixed mine.

In the interim, you can by-pass the pump by running the booster directly to the manifold and drive without smoke.

I just found this thread on search. I was wondering about a gear swap since my 114 really screams at highway speeds, worse than my 240D. Highway fuel economy sucks too. It doesn't help that I end up doing about 80 if I'm not careful. Mercedes really should have geared these cars higher.

I still remember the day I drove my 250CE home from where the transporter met me to offload her. I couldn't do the km/mph conversion and the engine was really screaming. I probably didn't go over 45mph.

I drove my car for 4 months prior to taking her apart for partial restoration. I can say that her abused, 40 year old, mal-tuned engine/trans/suspension/everything did a confident 140kph for 30 minutes without anything going wrong. I'm hopelessly in love with my Wilma and I can't wait till I'm done bringing her back to par.

barely related question:
my 1970 250CE (sold in Italy) has a trans that confuses this bejeesus out of this forum and anyone else I've asked so far. Is there anything special about a 250CE transmission? Is it somehow tied into the Bosch D-jetronic injection? Is it like the trans on a 250SE? I havent been able to figure this beach out.

I took my 250CE up to 115mph and it sounded like well tuned sewing machine. These cars sound strained when they really aren't.

Yup, I can only imagine how awesome Wilma's going to be when I'm done. I'll probably have someone else work on the transmission though. I only seem to be able to understand how auto's work on paper.

My 71 250C is black on black.
Very nice color combination.
