Mech Drive Speedometer Gears in Tansmission

I have a mech Speedometer installed on a 560 Tranny and since I installed it in the car my speedometer has been tempermental. I removed the tail of the transmission today and found that both plastic gears were chewed up. Anyone know what may have caused this are they not getting fluid? or is it possible that the gear on the shaft that goes to the Speedometer cable is on backwards any info on this would be a help. The car is a 280se 3.5 that I have installed a 5.0 liter mercedes with a 560 Transmission.
