Zenith Carb Acceletator Pump Rebuild Help Needed

i am rebuilding my carbs on my 72 250c and am interested in any tips on the removal and replacement on the rubber plunger on the bottom of the accelerator pump. one pump is good and one is bad. the bad one is faulty because the bottom brass retainer the one with the large X on the bottom that holds the plunger cup in place does not want to stay in its female connection when pushed into place. am i missing something. or should i just tap the male or female connection of this area slightly out of round so that when i force these peices together they stay? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Your repair may work. Have you searched for just the accel pump? There used to be an outfit called EPS in Santa Barbara where I ordered kits and accel pumps for my Zeniths. I don't think the accel pumps are meant to be disassembled, everything seems to be pushed together and crimped for life.

Last I checked, replacement pumps were about 20-25$. Buy a few spare gaskets while you're at it. They're always a good thing when trying to get the things working right. -CTH

All of the online sellers (Fastlane here, ***************) sell the rebuild kit for about $40, which includes a new pump. If you need a spring, send me an email with your address and I'll pull one out of one of my parts carbs.

1972 250C:

I just learned that EPS in Santa Barbara is shutting down. I understand the business is changing over to something MB related but I do not know what the plan is. I suspect that Fastlane may be the best source, but I looked at their view of the carb kit and did not see a pump among the parts. I'd call them to verify the kits include the pump. EPS used to sell just the pump.

It has been many years since I rebuilt either a Zenith 35/40 or the 32/40 like the ones on the 72. I can pass on a few tips. Make sure the air horn is not warped by checking it with a straight edge. Mechanics are afraid the air cleaner will fall off and roll down the street, so they tighten the 2 hold down screws with the biggest screw driver they can find. This warps the air horn and affects idle. You can file it flat again. Pre throttle gap is difficult to explain by typing, but is critical so you can fire up the car cold and back out of a garage without stalling. Be sure you get the jets and mixture tubes in the correct barrels. I can send specs if you can't find them. A Uni-Syn is necessary to properly synch the carbs. Disconnect the link between the two carbs, adjust idle air flow to be the same on both carbs, and adjust the connecting link to snap on tension free. There's more, but I'm out of time. When properly set up, I don't think you'll find a better carb system except maybe Stromberg.

Good luck,
Peter

Lots of posts on warping. dantrcav has some good ones on how to clean up the surfaces.

I think you can get a accel pump from a MB dealer if worst comes to worst. Ron@germanstar.net is also good on this stuff.

OK i fixed it and the car is up and running. BTW ..the large carb rebuild kits come with the plastic cup for the pump but not the brass and spring that form the accel pump. thanks everyone for your input and offers.

thanks
