1970 220D temperature sending unit

Hi all,My first post here
Well,I do most of my research in the background just searching for info I need...with that said,I have a question that I do not see the answer to.
My water temperature guage stopped working a few days ago, eveidently the line had a break (i don't know how or why) oldness maybe
I need to replace my temp guage (mechanical type) but all the temp guages that I have found...the sending unit or sensor will not fit into the block.
Now,should I be able to get a new guage to fit this,or would I need to get an adapter?? or maybe even have someone machine me a pipe to insert on the return water line to the radiator?
This is a ( 115 ) body style
Oh,did you people know that these old mechanical types have a capilary that is activated by ether?

All help appreciated

Since the bulb fitting into the block is the important criteria, would think that a used one from a junk yard would work well. Realize that W115's are not as easy to find as W123's, but they are out there. If one of the available bulbs could be fit to the block, and the other end of the system, ie. the gauge in the instrument panel was ok; then the attached info from a vintage Plymouth site could be very helpful. Might even be possible to replenish the original system with the correct amount of ether via this method if that proved to be the problem. Be sure to abide by their safety concerns about ether!!

Thanks for the Info Lycoming-8.
That was a very enlighting site.
I may attempt to do that grafting someday...but for right now I had a Pluming place make me up a (T) to put on my bottom radiator hose.
I'll see if this gives me a sufficient temp reading at that point.

I had the same problem,Ive got a w110 200D(om621) with mechanical temp.gauge-the tube got broken...After a search on
http://www.swag.de/deutsch/programm/elektrik/pdf/thermofuehler.pdf
page 9 I found a sensor with the thread necessary -M14X1,5 mm,suitable for w114,w115 and some w123,as well as light duty trucks, very common in europe.....the first one I bought(10$) (FEBI) had the right thread BUT wider body and couldn`t fit into the hole...luckily,I found another one(again FEBI,with the same number and slightly narrower body that fit perfectly!!!). I thought that I `d find easily the instument from some light truck in the junkyard....but alas, It`s been a year and I still don`t have it-bloody MB`s are unbreakable
The FEBI sensor has 08668 number which corresponds to either MB 005 542 26 17 or 005 542 10 17 which corresponds to VDO nr.323-801-020-002 D with the following characteristics:

http://www.lowtension.com/pdf/temperature_sensors.pdf#search='vdo%20323801020002%20D'

And now I have the desperate idea to connect an ohmmeter to the bloody sensor to know when the coolant reaches 90Celsius
The price of tube-sensor-instrument for my model is a killer....
Good luck!!!

Hi vox_incognita ,
You might want to try this ( T ) pipe that I had the local hardware guy make up for me...took about 15 minutes for him to think it through.
I now have a pipe with T junction that I can use in a straight-line configuration or right angle it....the sensor and adaptor fits right in just fine
I did wonder however if I do set it up as a right angled piece,If It would Impede the water flow...hmmmm
Well,we shall see...tomorrow I am hooking It up.

Hi,
How come on the lower rad.hose???The coolant there is much cooler Should be in the cyl .head...or,in the worst case, somewhere in the upper section of the block-the thermostat housing
