300 D Will not start

I've recently purchased a 1977 300 CD as a parts car from an auction and have little history on the car except that it was a drug seizure situation. The transmission is in the trunk but the engine is still intact, under the hood. I installed the starter and have been trying to get it to fire up but no success. It rolls over at a reasonable speed but will not even fire on starting fluid. I do not have a compression tester but that is my next course of action. Any ideas?

I'd refer to the diesel section and read through the threads and perhaps repost your questions there. You definitely should do a compression test to see if the engine is capable of firing but make sure a valve adjustment is done first to see whether or not it will start.

Good Luck

Are we safe to assume that you understand the correct starting procedure?

Does the glow plug light come on?

How long does it stay on?

Words of caution, starting fluid (ether) can be bad news, (or on the 6 o'clock news) using ether to start an MB diesel engine!

If two or more glow plugs are not functioning it will not likely fire off. ..BB
