Mufflers
Can anyone explain to me why American car companies can fit a car with a muffler that will easily last a dozen years, but Mercedes cannot?
My wife's old Mercury still has its original mufflers after ten years and 100K miles, and they show no signs they will fail anytime soon. In contrast, my Mercedes deserve a reserved parking spot at the muffler shop. Now, I concede my MBs are older and maybe the new models are better, I wouldn't know...but still, you ought to be able to build a Mercedes replacement muffler that will last as long as a cheap US muffler, dontcha think? Just want some feedback... 230/8 |

Top shelf muffler cobblers can fabricate a custom muff for the Benz using rust resistant aluminum coated pipes and superior baffles right off the shelf. Got this done on my single pipe system w123 for $200 total cost.
Y'all caint blame Benz for cost of shipping and sucker prices set by subcontractors in Mexico, Spain, Brazil and elsewhere who manufacture and merchandise the "official" replacement MB muffler. Hell the real beauty of Vintage MB's is exceptional detailed coachwork, handling, suspension, drivetrain and engine...... nothing else really matters. |

Most cars with cat-converers, like your Mercury, tend to heat the exhaust to a higher temperature, which may help drive out moisture. Also, many cars built in the past 10 to 15 years were factory equipped with a stainless steel exhaust - not real high grade stainless, but good enough to last awhile. Chances are, when you get a standard replacement exhaust for that Mercury, it won't last nearly so long.
Many exhaust systems rust out from outside, as well as inside. While most replacment mufflers are galvanized or aluminum coated, often the pipes are mild steel and the outside corrodes rapidly. A coating of silver paint on the pipes, hangers, brackets, welds, etc, can prolong their life considerably. Happy Motoring, Mark

Except one pipe on my car (the right header pipe), the exhaust system on my car is still original (or at least the same one it had when purchased by my parents in 1989).
Can't tell ya what's wrong with yours, but mine doesn't have any problems!
