116 window regulator removal dilemna

Pot metal cracked on my 75 450 left window regulator.
Trying to get it out- have a replacement.
Have disconnected the window and it is pushed up to the top
of the door. All regulator bolts are out. Front channel
vertical channel bottom is loose.
Even took out the metal stop that connects to the inner front
fender that keeps the door from opening too far.
I cannot get this thing out! The power window mtr. is still
connected. I see no way to loosen it when it's in the door.
(The later jkyd car I got the replacement reg out of was a
79 and it had some access holes to remove the pwr mtr bolts-
mine does not)
It wants to hang up on the vertical front channel.
Looks like I've got to remove the front channel. How do I do this?
How is it connected to the top. What do I do with the window if
I have to do this? Or is there some way to get the mtr. out
Of course I need to install the new reg with this mtr. on it.
I've stopped working on it before I break something.
Got to be some kind of trick to get this thing out. HELP

It's hard for me to remember but to get the vertical channel out you may have to pry out the felt window guide, start at the bottom and behind it at the top of the channel there may be a screw thru the channel into the door. unscrew this and the channel comes out. Milt.

Or maybe you have to take out the mirror and behind that there may be a screw. Sorry I can't be more definite but I just can't remember. I do know I have had mine out a couple of times. Milt.

Thanks Milterino.
Anyone else know for sure?
Also, the wire is disconnected from the regulator
but is there also a disconnect on the motor?
When I get this channel thing figured out I need to know this.

Find a copy of the 116 chassis manual, very useful.

Emmerich- certainly you are correct, but I know the 116 chassis shop
manuals are hard to find and expensive when you do.
I was hoping that someone who has done this task, and I know many have,
would simply read my question and tell me what I might be overlooking like
Millerino tried to do.

not in volume 1

I just looked in my chassis and body series 116 volume 1manual and it is not covered. When we did it on I don’t recall if it was the 1979 or the 1980 300sd we had to replace one on. The CD manual had a template that you printed out and taped to the door panel. There were three holes marked on the paper template that you had to drill thru the door sheet metal to get the motor regulator out. Some one must have the CD Manuel I gave mine away But I am sure at least on the late 1970’s 300SD W116 you have to drill holes in the door panel to access some screws the instructions on the crummy W116 CD you buy off EBay were real good in this case sorry I cant be of more help.

Yes, The 116 manual has a layout yhat shows you where to cut 3 holes with a hole saw to get to the bolts that hold the regulator in.

been a while, but you need to remove rubber door seal to access one or two screws hidden in that channel. i remember removing mirror too. that allows you to remove front window channel to wiggle motor out.

replacing the window reg

I had the motor removed from the reg once, there are 3 hex /allen screw. ( they 're recessed inside the metal panel, on top right upper area) When u undo them the motor get detached, then remove the regulator. I think this maybe the way of removing. I have done it once earlier, the front channel glass rail seem to be in the way, as the whole stoopid thing doesn't budge at all.
Please let me know how the progress, i will be working on it soon, as my driver door motor has been on strike for few weeks, luckily it died when it was fully up!
Good Luck.

hey sd300
most of the time it is a gunked up console switch not sending power to the motor. pop out the switch, they come apart, slowly they contain small copper springs and ball bearings, clean contacts and you should be good to go. kindda hot w/out that window open

window motor

I recently did this to a 1980 300SD. It did take the hex/allen sockets and there were holes in the inside door panel (3, I think) to remove the window motor from the regulator. After that the regulator just pulls out the bottom assuming the window track etc are detached. Good luck. I think it took me two weeks of fiddling with it off and on (mostly off) do finally get it apart and a new one installed and door panel back. I'm slow....
