Injector holder question

I know this is a dumb question but I can't figure it out.
I've bought new fuel injector seals and holders for my 76 450sl,
and right below the O-ring the holders have little tabs - that
aren't on the holders that come out of the car.
(picture enclosed)

But the tabs seem to keep the O-ring from seating properly - or perhaps
I've bent them a bit.
Are the tabs necessary? Do they bend over the O-ring or just slide down into the opening in the engine?
Thanks
