W111 280SE Coupe Window lists + trans?
Hi all
Just got my 280SE -69 from US to Norway. Mostly a very ok car, just one small spot of rust. I notice that a part if the rubber (?) material is missing in the low end of the rear window (on bith sides). This allows for extensive amount of water getting into the door and onto the rear floor. Can someone please tell me what part-number I need to fix this? And where to get it....? I also notice a vast differance between my 280SE 4.5 3-step automatic and this 6-cyl 4-step automatic trans. The V8 + 3-step is so "cool" while the 6-cyl reaches rather high revs 50-60 MPH and it is also very noisy (valve-tic?). If someone has the same combo 280SE Coupe + 4-step auto, that is your RPM at 50 MPH 4.gear? I have a feeling this trans is not correct for this engine....but then again, I have never had this combo (not more then 40-50 coupe's here in Norway i guess). Thanks Tom

Gearing
I believe the gear ratios on American market Mercedes were different from European ones, because of the 55mph speed limits in the US. That might have something to do with it. Unfortunately I can help at all regarding the rubber parts.

The 55mph national speed limit wasn't established until about 1974. Prior to that speed limits were up to the states and varied, as they do today.
The US gearing was different from the european because our speed limits were still way below Autobahn cruising speeds....

Tom, is it the transmission or rear-end ratios that vary??
If it was me I'd look at the 'other end' of the horse..... determining the final drive ratio and then exploring differential options for the swing-axle pumpkin. On rear window weather stripping, Vintage MB website from Poland in useful Vintage Links Folder has parts catalogue schematics. It's in Polish language but that doesnt matter. Knowing MB, you can probably still order parts using Catalogue designation, page and picture number - even from 36 yrs ago. Meanwhile I'd be taping it with black electrical tape whenever it rains. |

the rear in all 280se/c cars, independent of country is either 3.62 or 3.96. The 3.62 being the 2nd version. Don't know when it cut over. Cars with 15" wheels & the ZF-5 speed got a different set of ratios.
All the automatic transmissions for the straight-6 had the same gear ratios, even when they switched from the k4A to K4c transmission in mid-69. If you have the earlier transmission (needs a 19mm wrench to remove the drive-shaft),there is plenty of stuff on diagnosis in the archives. Make sure the double-acting solinoid is working and correctly ajusted. Check the modulator too. -CTH |
