Transmission Questions 1989 300SE Mercedes
Does anyone know what transmissions are interchangeable with a 1989 300SE? Also I could use some feedback as to the cause of a vibration I have between 40 - 48mmph. I thought it was a rear tire or bent rim, but they are fine. It almost feels like a flutter that either disappears or what is causing it turns so fast that after 50 you really cannot notice it. When I break, it is back from about 48 down to a little after 40mph. Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. The car is really tight and runs great and I just do not want to overlook anything that can damage it. Thank you.

Tranny isn't going to give you a vibration at a single speed like that, not that I know of anyway.
Have you checked/replaced the flex disks (front especially) and engine/transmission mounts? How about the center bearing and rubber mount? Also, check the rear suspension links for wear, ditto for differential mounts. All of the above can cause speed specific vibrations. If worse under acceleration, most likely the tranny mount (it will drum) or the flex disk -- that will also cause thumps on downshifts. I would suspect the transmission itself last, it's more likely a driveline problem. Peter
