Deal is done. 73 220

Car to be delivered Saturday. Very charming. so deeply uncool its ...cool. If anybody can tell me what the official color of the interior is, that would be helpful, but I can figure it out eventually. Comes with a parts manual, original dealer and factory documents, all in original pouch. Restored about 8 years ago, buying from second owner.

Nice car. The standard interior was brown. You could have a black exterior and the standard was brown. Its the one thing about early MB that I hated, the standard parchment interior. However it does look good with the beige/light brown exterior and it looks clean.
Whats the mileage?

Thanks!
128k. Re: the blower fan saga, turning the switch actually dims the interior lights slighty when turned, so the switch appears to be juiced. For me this is a good thing. Maybe the fan just needs asome penetrating oil and some twiddling by hand to get it going. If that's all it is, I'm way ahead.

Are you kiddin?? Get used to that 220/8 and you'll be *glad* not to have all the crap that comes with later models.

We were talkin about what distinguishes Vintage MB's from later cars a few days ago, and everybody agrees the demarcation point is where you stop talking about the car and start talking about computerized junk and fiddly bits instead.

Drivin a bare-bones Benz will remind you what cars are about.

(edit: Now just for the hulluvit, visualize that 220 with two-tone paint job where color of the roof matches the interior. Just paint the roof and leave the rest of the car in original MB lacquer.

It's bare-bones condition is exactly why I bought it; very refreshing. Only the fitting of an auto trans corrupts its basic purity

Thanks to this forum, the fan and the signal stalk are fixed already. No problems. Best-DIY-site-ever.

I had one of these many years ago. Mine was a '72, 'chocolate grey' (Not sure of the correct name but it almost looked like a lavender color) with a dark brown interior. It had AC and automatic, but curiously, no power steering! Not alot of pep around town with the automatic, especially when the AC was on, but a great highway cruiser. That 4-cylinder 220 engine seemed happier at highway speeds than the 6-cylinder 250 sedan that later replaced it. I spent a year learning and fixing. One thing to look out for on these W114/115 cars is fatigue-cracking of the gas tanks at the top, around the dimple where the guage sending unit is installed. Then they leak gas when the tank is full. I replaced my cracked tank with a good one out of a '75 280, which also increased my fuel capacity from 17 to 20 gallons. My 220 also had a worn steering box and wandered somewhat at highway speeds. I fixed that just before I sold the car, by replacing it with a power steering system out of a junked '70 250C. Perhaps I might have kept that 220 if I could have added a manual tranny too.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Thanks for the heads-up Mark. And yep, this one doesn't even have power steering.
