Cruise control on a 108?

Is there any way to retrofit cruise control to a W108 w/M117?

I don't believe it was available as a factory option, however, aftermarket kits which used to be sold at Sears would work fine I bet. I don't know if they still make those kits, but I recall installing one around 1980 that you glued 2 small magnets to the driveshaft and mounted a sensor on the bottom of the tunnel which was the speed sensor and then a transducer was mounted under the hood which pulled the throttle linkage open accordingly.

A small "pod" went onto the turn signal stalk that had "on/off set, resume, accel," etc on it and finally a brake switch and inertia switch (mercury switch) were used to cut-off the system. I recall the kit being under $100 and working very well.

I am not that familiar with the setup on the 116 chassis cars, but as the motor is the same on the early 116's, it shouldn't be a huge challenge. Need to look at one and see what pieces we wood need.

There are / were kits that worked off one of the plug-wires, instead of requiring fussing with magnets and a pickup at the driveshaft. In the early '90s, I bought an 'Equuss' cruise control that used a plug-wire sensor. It had a switch one could pre-set for a manual or automatic tranny. the electronics and vacuum servo were in a single underhood box with a simple wire harness to an under-dash control and cable connected to the throttle linkage. It seemed sturdier than some of those cruise kits from Sears and worked reasonably well for two years until, I guess, the underhood temperatures fried the Taiwan computer chips.

Happy Motoring, Mark
