Column shift loose linkage or by design?

Folks: The car is my 74 280C.
It has a column shift automatic.
It has always been sloppy, out about 1/2 a position.
While investigating this today I found one of the links would compress about 6 - 8 mm. I thought this was the problem, however when I removed it, it appears to be designed to move, as there is a pin with a machined slot and a very small return spring inside.
I am puzzled why there should be any play in the linkage?
Perhaps to allow for engine torque, but then I don't want any play in the shift pattern.

Any thoughts??
Thanks
Doug Quance

If the design is similar to the W108 there is a shear pin in the shaft the runs parallel to steering column. This pin can work loose and cause play like you describe. The pin is there for safety reasons so in the event of an accident the pin will give way.
