MegaSquirt
So, one of my car-guru buddies turned me on to this yesterday. I've been reading up on it, and it seems really nice. Has anybody here tried this, to replace either D-Jet or K-Jet? How did it work, if so> It's pretty cheap, I could easily do it for under $300 on my 4.5.
Anyone have any opinions on it?

will let the technically savy folks tune their cars to a "T" fare better than the stock mechanical Injection system is capible of. Its basicly a generic EFI controller....For a DIY EFI system for a car where no OEM system exists....or lacks tuneability... Max power and max fuel economy are achivable only though great fuel mamagement.

I'm thinking of trying it on my 4.5. I've been weary spending money on it - the things I have spent money on, I can recoup on eBay if needed when I eventually let it die a rusty death *sigh*. I'm guessing there might be one or two 4.5 owners on this board who would buy it off of me if/when that time came. I like the idea that it has feedback and I can plug a laptop into it while driving to get readouts of everything.

Did anyone else put 3.5 heads and cams on their 4.5?
I think I'm too much of a pioneer at times.

On the heads Tomguy, I just did not see that it would give the performance increase that would warrent the change. This Megasquirt may be.

Well, my 4.5 would probably benefit more from it because of the head change, just like it would benefit more from an ignition upgrade. That having been said, maybe I'll do it, maybe I won't. It remains to be seen. If I do, maybe then I'll post results.

the megasquirt is a wonderful and cheap stand alone engine management system, it has been around for a few years now and its one of those things that everyone sorta co-engineers, pretty cool. however, unless you really, really undertand electronics, and motors, you will have great difficulties. it takes quite awhile to do, and tuning is quite the chore. but, if its worth it to you then just giver.

When I was a kid, my dad bought me one of those AM radio kits, I had no problem putting it together by myself. I was around 6-8 (I moved at 8 and it was before then).
I built my own PC. I swapped the heads around on my 4.5, and changed cams several times. I know how engines work, ever since I took my Go-Kart engine entirely apart when I was 12 and put it back together. I think I could do it. I have a spare wiring harness to play with. I'm looking at the sensors I'll need. I think the trickiest part will be getting the sensor installed in the exhaust properly. I want to do it on the driver's side but I have a small leak at the manifold.

I've been trying to push Megasquirt for a while. I may put it on my 300SE.

Using the D-Jet system will require you either fabricate a TPS (the stock D-Jet unit is just a switch), or you use the MAPdot option (search here for more info on this) and don't use a TPS at all. The other D-Jet sensors can be matched to the MS, except the MPS, which you'll replace with the MAP sensor in the MS (this is good, as the D-Jet MPS is impossible to rebuild properly, and finding working one is difficult). If you get a really complete system, it will even have a fuel pump and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, though these parts can be sourced separately fairly easily. The D-Jet injectors are low-impedence (search here if you don't know what that means). I've been doing some investigating but I have not started any work yet. Also since the K-jet is a mechanical system it is not as easy to adapt to MS.

Closed or Open Loop
I didnt see anything about Lambda sensor support, if this could be added as part of the upgrade then tuning could be greatly simplified and even more accurate fuel control.
I would guess that 100's of hours would be required to get the fuel control right under all conditions and without a rolling road and emissions tester it would be a long iterative process based on driving the car between software changes. |
