remove 220d instrument panel
I'm sure this question has been answered many times before. I did do multiple searches with different keywords, but haven't been able to find a post dealing with it. How do I remove my instrument cluster in my 69 220d? The lamps aren't functioning. I've played with the rheostat to no avail.

Giving this question a bump because mine is identical. Have searched around, but can't find instructions on removing the instrument cluster on my 1970 220d. I need to replace the rheostat, it finally gave out after toying with it enough trying to get it to keep the light on. Thanks!

Push it out from the back, or use the factory style hooks to pull it from the front.
It's held in by friction, and if it's never been out, it can be very sticky. Unscrew the speedo cable. Also, be careful of the capillary oil pressure line! Jim

Thanks! Does everything get detached right there from the back of the panel, or do I have to follow anything through the firewall or elsewhere to detach from the other end? I assume I need to plug this oil capillary.

The clusters are held in rather soundly by a rubbery gasket and friction...and if the speedo cable doesn't have a wee bit of slack...that can contribute to difficulties pulling out the cluster...
It was a tight squeeze to get my hand back there to remove the speedo cable...but it can be done... You may want to go from underneath...try to slacken the speedo cable a wee bit and push it out from behind reaching up under the steering column if possible... Not a bad job...but can be frustrating...

There's usually a bracket holding the speedo cable alongside the steering column. Undo this to give you a little more slack. You also need to undo the wiring plug. It pulls straight out. Be careful with the plug. It has a center locating prong and it may be brittle.
Hunh, 40 year old car and the plastic is brittle? Go figure.
