w108 limited slip diff

I Just deciphered the data card for my 68 208se. It lists a limited slip differential as one of the options on the car. Is this something to get excited about?

Is this a rare or desirable option on this model? Is the performance better and does it drive differently from a car that doesn't have it?

Any info or expertise on the subject would be appreciated thanks!

Mark

Yes it is rare and yes it is very nice to have. Basically it is a clutch in the diff that prevents the wheel with less traction to just spin and directs more torque to the other wheel. (just like the Subaru ad!) I put a LSD in a 250SE I use to own and it made a big difference in slippery conditions. Once at an autocross I pushed to hard and the car went off the pavement and ended up in the bottom of a muddy basin. I thought for sure that I would need a wrecker to winch me out. But I put the W108 back in gear and slowly it started to move. It climbed back up the embankment to the cheers of the startled crowd!! Car was covered in mud but no worse for wear!

My 72 280SE also has the limited slip (read it on the original invoice Option 256 - $70).

What sort of fluid is required for this differential?

Recommended Trans. fluid was Dexron B

btw, the limited slip, was a bargain compared to the sliding sunroof ($285)
The Stereo radio was $289, not including the power antenna (another $88)
The most expensive option? the A/C $518

thanks for the info guys! It doesn't take me much to get excited about my w108, but it's a nice treat to know it has limited slip rear end.

I guess this would explain what the old original can of Veedol is doing in the trunk...for the limited slip rear end...

Larry just about any modern diff lube is rated for limited slip differentals. However there are also special additives that can be added to supplement the lube. I know GM has one for it's limited slip diffs that is highly recommended. They should have it at your local Chebbie dealer.

Regarding your auto antenna where is the switch for that located? Is it a round knob or toggle switch?

Thanks

Bill,
As far as I remember, the antenna goes up, when I turn on the Radio.
I do not recall seeing a seperate knob for the antenna....although the sunroof switch is right next to the radio.
