The brass keys provided by the previous owner were really worn down. I had read here at MercedesShop that steel keys were the only way to go. None of the local locksmiths were able to provide steel keys so I tried the dealer. They didn't have any in stock, but ordered some steel blanks for me. The part number is A000 766 51 06, I don't know what years that part number covers, but they fit my 108.
The dealer no longer cuts keys and they told to go to a locksmith to get them cut. I did that this morning. The locksmith complained about having to cut steel keys, because "it's sooo hard on the cutters" and then he told me how bad steel keys are for the tumblers and he can't guarantee the cuts, etc. Well, he cut the keys and they worked fine in the ignition, a little stiff in the doors and trunk and not at all on the glove box. When I got home I compared the old brass keys to the newly cut steel ones and found the depth of some of the cuts was not as deep on the new keys. A few minutes of careful work using small square and rat tail files, and constant fitting/trying, produced two keys that work perfectly in every lock.

The dealer can also order a "pre cut" key for your ignition. My dealer ordered a key for my 1967 230SL with only my VIN. To my surprise, it fit and worked fine. It took 3-4 weeks. I have also ordered steel key blanks for my doors and trunk from Star Quality. I was also hassled by the locksmith. My fear of loosing the only key has now passed.

I tried to get "pre-cuts" through the dealer, but I was told they were not available for one "that old" and all the dealer could do was order a set of blanks. I believed the dealer - shame on me. Maybe I'll try another dealer closer to LA for a set of pre-cuts, one can never have too many keys. Until then I'll enjoy using my "hand tuned" keys.

I had a set made and was also advised that the steel will wear out the pins. So I had a set of brass made, and when they wear, I have a good set of steel as masters. It is far easier to replace keys than tumblers.
I got my keys from Tom Hansen at Caliber Motors wholesale, however I do have the original key numbers from which the keys could be duplicated. Ed |
