New project: 1971 250 sedan
Hello everyone. This is my first post here, and I have a very basic question. I just started rehabing a 1971 250 sedan (gas motor). I am starting by changing the oil first since it has not been started in close to a year. However, I need to know what is the size of allen wrench I need for the drain plug? I went to a couple of parts stores and no one really seems to know.
Secondly. Any thoughts on using white lithium grease for relubing the chassis, etc.? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I don't recall seeing any grease points for these vehicles. Also the drain plug has a 14mm? hex head and not an allen head.

Mint: What you are looking for is an allen head wrench, also called socket head. The size is 14mm.
Samstag has them with a 14mm allen one end and a 17mm box end on the other end: http://www.samstagsales.com/images/hz2760.jpg Or, one of these simple allen sockets will work with your socket wrench set: http://www.samstagsales.com/Gedore/gdin19-14.jpg I got mine from the Snap-On guy. 230/8 |

you can find that allen key at any sears, home depot or autozone these days. The point in the process you want to be careful at is when you touch the carb's adjusters. Read up on balancing zenith carbs here and elsewhere. -CTH

A Haynes manual will answer many questions while this link will help with the carbs. The carbs require a lot of patience to set and then, once set, should not need tinkering with.
Mercedes sells a CD of nearly all of the manuals for the 114 chassis. New, it's about $100, Ebay it's less. I've assumed its the 114 chassis. Check the first three digits of the vin and memorize them. They'll come in handy down the road. Enjoy. Michael
