naming cars

I have never felt enough connection to the mechanized conveyances in my driveway to bother naming them, but I see that many people name their M-B's. I also note that many are female names. How many of us name cars, and of those people, how many actually put that name on the car, either as a vanity license plate or a sticker of some sort?

You're in trouble, friend. The first symptom of car-naming illness is when you ask others about it.

In the case of your beater SL, I have a name in mind: BUBBA!

good grief...there's only so much space in my garage and driveway, the overflow already stays at my office. We just refer to them by color for the moment.

My first car ('73 Chrysler Newport) was Walter-named after his dad Walter Chrysler. I liked to say that Walter was Christine's cousin (remember that book/movie?). Second ('72 Mercury Montego with black primer, hot cam, 4bbl, and duals with glasspacks) was The Beast. 3rd was just some '76 Buick. 4th ('63 Dodge Dart with '79 360 and 4bbl on an Edelbrock intake with duals and glasspacks) was the second Beast. Lincoln Town Car is just that-no name, though I thought about Mary Todd (Lincoln: nut-case first lady from the Civil War). Then there's Sammy the Samurai.

For the Benz, the plate says U 505 (bit of WWII history). Not sure if it's a male or female. Considering Hans if the former or Ilse if the latter. One of my Navy buddies had a '65 CJ5 named Clifford.

My signature line speaks for itself, and my self proclaimed certification is part of the reason, however , I believe if you name a piece of mechanical equipment,it will treat you better and you will be better able to handle the issues that develop between owner and said mechanical item
BTW - I am a sick man

naming cars

My family thinks I'm crazy, but I named both of mine, a 69 230 and a 77 240E. The '69 is named Milly, after the original owner. And the other one is Betty Blue. I'm going tomorrow to look at a 77 240D that runs on biodiesel, so wish me luck on that! Hopefully I'll need to come up with another name.
It does seem they are usually named women, but my mom named her car Andrew. so there's an exception.

Boy I feel so much better now! Other people also name there cars. All my friends looked at me like I was some kind of car nut case. My first German car Was a 92 Audi 100 S named "AUDREY" which i bought because I could not afford a MBZ yet. She was a pretty nimble thing and fun to drive . Then along came a local fella who wanted to buy her at a decent price so I bid adue! But I live in a small town so I get to see here drivin around! So flushed with a little extra cash the hunt was on for a Benz. Saw a internet add for a clean 95 E420 and to be honest I did not know a E320 from a E420 ! I just wanted a Benz . So my friend and I drove about 3hrs to go look at the car! Took some cash just in case! Well up drives the prettiest Blue 95 E420! We got in and went for a ride and I was hooked line and sinker. I offered the man $7200 and when he took it my buddy had to kind of steady me up! I am now the proud owner of " BIGBLUE " The smile has yet to leave my face and the luck that it was a V8 made it all the better!

Well, I've only named three. My first Benz, a '61 Ponton 180b, was 'Heidi'. My first British car, a '62 Hillman Super-Minx convertible was 'Reginald - Churchill's Chariot'. My current '60 220S Fintail is nick-named after original owner, the late Eloise Powell. Her two daughters used to refer to their mother as 'Miss Daisy'

Happy Motoring, Mark

Probly the most amazing MB car name I've ever seen was on license plate too.... it was an immaculate metalic dark brown 116 in Louisville with plates that said UNCLBNZ.

My 1987 300D's name is Bodhi Benz, or "Bo." That's not what I have on my vanity tag, but I did order a silver nameplate that sticks on the inner trim, which has a MB logo and "Bodhi" written on it.

There is a fine line between hobby and mental illness, and yes, I crossed it long, long ago.

Naming cars...

My mercedes is the only car i've ever named...and really only so i can talk about 'her' here. It's probably just anthropomorphic...but sometimes mechanized entities seem to develope an almost tangible character/predisposition. Sorta like a woman's predisposition...ya never really know what's-up til ya get your hands dirty under the hood!?

I also have a '94 BMW 740iL for sale in northern California. Really clean and well maintained. Engine oil @ change same color as when i put it in.
