who makes these number emblems ?

Does anyone know, where I can find someone who would do the emblem with the numbers (paint code, option numbers etc.), which is located on top of the radiator framing. I know what numbers are to be punched.
Here is a pic of an example of what I mean ?

Yeah but why do you need to make this plate instead of just scratching the paint and info numbers onto the upper radiator support mount?

That's legal identification for the car, you understand. And in some places it constitutes criminal offense to tamper with serial number plates or to make your own. Is Finland fencing stolen Mercedes Benz these days?

Used to be that Russia across the iron curtain is where stolen MB's from Europe went. But if the Vintage Mercedes Benz black market is now based in Finland then good luck in your endeavors.

Irregardless of your intent, probably what you need to do is pour some molten lead onto existing plates to get a mold of the letters and numbers from various plates until you get a complete alphabet. Then cut apart into individual pieces and take the molded lead number and letter assortment to a jeweler or fine metal worker to make an exact duplicate of the same letters and numbers in harder steel that can be used as template bits for stamping your own plates. Carefully done you can then forge your own serial number plates however you choose.

Otherwise, send me an email and maybe we can work out a deal. For a decent price I'll be happy to cook up the number and letter dyes, tools etc that you will need for renumbering Vehicle Identification Number plates.

And dont worry - it's not necessarily true that global interpol security measures now cover this forum. So you're probably safe for the time being in your criminal endeavors, if renumbering stolen MB's is what you are doing.

Do not misunderstand me. I want to make a new plate because the old one is in a very bad condition. This plate is by no means legally binding, it does not even have the chassis number in it (I beleive the numbers are some sort of production identification or something like that), the only understandable numbers about it are the option codes and the paint.

The car is perfectly legal even without any such plate, but it does not look nice if there isnt one.

The chassis number is stamped to the frame in the firewall and that is something else, that should not be messed with.

I did ask a mercedes dealer in Germany, but they dont produce such plates anymore (they did before). So I will have to produce my own. I thought these are just stamped on a thin plate.

I believe your are just kidding, right

Mine says 108 12 7 on it, no reference to the vin whatsoever. Wonder what that code means though (the 7?)? The one in the pic would make you think its' the 777th 107 chassis (lucky 7's!). Is that the vin? If so, the plates' formats must have been changed at some point.

All of these plates that I've seen carry the VIN# and so does the one in your illustration. Of course if cosmetics are your chief concern then you could probably find an engraver to make a custom brass plate for you in similar configuration to the old worn out one that bothers you.

What took me by surprise is that anybody can be so picky that even condition of the original paint number code plate in the engine compartment should bother them. And if it was me involved with stolen Vintage MB's, then yes faking these small plates would be where I'd begin - of course I'm joking.

But it's probably FACT that 70% of MB's in Russia today found their way there as stolen cars. To the best of my knowledge there never was an MB Dealership network in the USSR.

Over here in North America, Mexico City is where you can find the best pick of stolen cars, hijacked semi-trucks, hot motorcycles, etc. Unfortunately with computerized databases registering untitled vehicles is not as easy as it used to be. But yeah, there have gotta be bumper crops of stolen SL's, Coupes and deluxe models out there still on the road today.

Actually the VIN is not in that plate, the first eight numbers are there but the rest is something different. That has been so, with all the cars I have seen and we have been wandering on that here with no good answer.
The russians are not interesed in vintage cars and not even on 107, 129, 123 or 124 or 126. They go for the top end new models.
I guess I am picky, but that is the first thing that catches the eye when opening the hood.
Thanks for the replies, I'll see how it goes
