I bought a 114 new in 1971 and had it for close to 20 years. It was then sold to a friend who got another couple of years from it til rust got the better of it..

It was and is to this day , the BEST Benz I ever owned , bar none .. and I have owned/repaired/restored/etc many model/chassis/vintage to make such a comparison.
A GREAT car !!!!!!

The carbs can be a PITA, but otherwise they are good cars. Rust is their main enemy.

The car on e-bay is about as good as they get. I could not see anything wrong or un-original from the pictures. It even has the factory AC hoses and what looks to be the orginal speaker grille. But it is also the highest selling price I have seen in the last ten years.

The only problem is that at least historically, there are only a handful of people who like the 114's enough to pay this kind of money for them.

Everybody needs to quit bidding these w114s up! I want my bright-yellow, w114 with a manual m110, and I won't be able to afford it if everybody keeps asking so much for these cars! I saw a 250 four door with bubbley fenders for 5k last summer...i groaned

cheers,

Question I'd be asking is has the car been recently registered and driven, hopefully on daily basis. You want a knowledgable seller with time capsules like this, somebody who knows the car from having driven it and gotten used to it themselves. Worst problem is probably suspension mounts and rubber window seals are worn out and cracked over time, thats all.

But red flag for me is the seller constantly bragging about cosmetics but saying practically nothing about the $2000 service it received a couple of months ago. Ask him to fax you the receipts and then call the dealership that did the work, thats what I'd do.

Questions for the dealership:
1) Valve seals?
2) Tranny shifting without "flaring"?
3) Engine compression and oil consumption?
4) Brake callipres okay?
5) Suspension mounts okay?
6) Rubber window seals okay?

But if its as good as it looks you'd be hard pressed to find a better classic 114 Coupe. Earlier 114's pre-'73 are better than newer ones with massive seats and corner vent windows. And you duck the 1973-79 German steel workers' strike when MB was using Italian steel for sheet metal. Those are the ones most prone to rust.

114 popularity is based on their simple styling. A genuine eye catcher and a vehicle you can love forever. An impressive businessman's Benz too. I sold real estate back in the '90s driving a 1974 280 sedan for property tours with clients and customers.

I would say the biggest flaw is the lack of center arm rest in the 5 passanger vehicles.

W114 Timewarp Coupe

Well, she went for twelve and change - and what a beauty! And what could you buy nowadays for 13K? - a KIA or a Cobalt? Know which one I'd rather have...oh wait, I do...just a whole lot older and funkier...
