Capillary Tube Argh!
Hey all, I did a search on this one but was hoping for more information.
While ajusting the valves on the 220 the capillary tube on the temp sending unit became dislodged from the unit, hence, the gauge has ceased functioning. Is it possible to repair this connection? My forum search revealed a posting about a Plymouth site where they detail the grafting of a new sender onto a known functioning gauge. Has anybody tried to repair this connection at the sender? Does Mercedes use ether as the alcohol filler? Thanks in advance! ~K

I think it`s ether...I don`t have the skills and nerves to do that
That`s what other members did: 1970 220D temperature sending unit Luckily,I was promised a temp.instrument from a light truck(om617engine,or om60x)from a junkyard(1 year of searching)that`s matched with the electrical gauge I installed: http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=3&F=601477&M=617913&GA=720%2E110722%2E393&GM=711%2E110711%2E112711%2E113&Z=601%2E551+++++++++601%2E553+++++++++601%2E555+++++++++601%2E557&H=741%2E404741%2E405741%2E406741%2E436741%2E437741%2E439&V=730%2E404730%2E446&L=760%2E204765%2E500765%2E501&VIN=%2A&CT=F&cat=274&SID=54&SGR=001&SGN=01 it`s number 735..a $100 new... |

Complete Failure.
I attempted to fix the capillary tube...failed horribly.
I was able to disassemble the bulb portion. It is basically three pieces, the ether bulb, the main housing where the tube comes in and the retaining nut. After getting the nut free of the assembly I put a torch to the other components and seperated them (they are soldered together.) Here are the problems I encountered: 1. Keeping the new ether from volatizing. 2. Getting solder to go into the connections. I have sweated plenty of joints before but was totally unable to get the braided portion of the capillary tube to suck in the solder. I wound up just filling the housing with solder so I could drive it, but even that is seeping. So...does anyone have a Euro (celsius) temp gauge that would fit w111? Thanks, ~K
