The 450SEL has landed
What a long and not too strange trip it was.
We flew into Dallas late Monday night. An aircraft change in Phoenix nearly lost us oour seats, the hotel shuttle went to bed twenty minutes before we landed and they sold our room. They did shuttle us to a cheaper hotel free of charge . We missed Ben the first go around as the first hotel had no record of us. Oh yea, I'd just come of three twelves on the night shift. Can you say tired and cranky? Anyhow, we met up with Ben, traded keys for check and took off for home. The car is a blooming tank, runs 80 down the freeway all day long and is pretty comfy too. Ben had done a lot of work and it drove very nicely with no problems all the way home. We left Dallas around 1PM. The GPS wanted us to head due north to Oklahoma City then turn left toward California. I had to tell it to send me to Amarillo first to cut down on the miles. Without to much drama, we stopped about ¼ inch into New Mexico for the night. Texas rest stops are way nicer than New Mexico’s. Headed out in the morning. Hit Barstow around midnight and stayed in a Holiday Inn Express. Same dang room as the first cheap motel for only $19 more! California rest stops aren’t any nicer than New Mexico’s. Still no problems with the car, other than the gas gauge keeps heading down to the big red R. 149 Gallons! Headed out in the morning and after being a bit frightened by the pass, stayed in Ashland at the Best Western. By far the best hotel and the cheapest too. Even had a genuine electric lamp in the fake fireplace. By this time Mata’s ear was hurting quite a bit, more then she would admit. She is off to the Doctor this AM to get it checked out. Rolled into the driveway around 5PM Friday. Yea! Oh, did I mention we have an eight-month-old boy? He’s an awesome traveler, no tears on the plane, no fussing in the car but a lot of diapers. If you ask, most every place will give you hot water for formula. Tis nice to be home but now I’ve got bills to pay, leather to cut and an ACC-II to fix. I think the clip between the gear train and the valve has come off as I have control of the fan speed and flaps. Gotta go, Michael 1971 250C and now 1976 450SEL

Congratulations
Interesting story, glad you made it home safe and sound. The W116 is a pretty fun car that should be quite happy on any of today's highway.

Very cool story and sounds like a trip you will remember. What sort of fuel mileage would you say you got on the trip? 10-12 mpg?

The odo is busted but the GPS seems accurate enough. The speedometer is 5MPH fast also. Michael

The servo was in good shape, I need to find new screws to put it back together. Fixed the dash lights by jumping the rheostat.

That's probably pretty good for the 450. I get about that in a 250C and get about 19 in an injected 230SL.

My 250C gets 13-14 but thats almost all city driving and not fully warmed up.
The factory tire size is 205/72 HHR14 and the tires are 215/60 14. Not sure if there is much of a difference in rolling diameter. The tires on the Coupe are 205/70 14 (IIRC) but the dealer told me they were the same diameter as the factory tires and it seems he was right. It seems to me that in the past, worng tire size has lead to a percentage difference rather than a fixed one. This seems to be 5 MPH across the dial from 30 to 85, something I could probably fix by turning the pointer while holding the shaft. Michael
