Petronix vs. Crane

I am looking to upgrade the ignition on my newly aquired 72 250C. I am looking at either the Petronix or Crane upgrades. I like the look of the Petronix as it hides well under the cap to keep a stock look but if the Crane performs better I'm willing to go that route. Do you have and advice on which system I should go with?

I prefer the crane for a pagoda. It is optical. No problems with getting the right unit like some have with the pertronix. Along with the red coil use I have opened the gaps some. Have not used this on the w114 chassis, but I imagine the same results will be obtained.

Just hide the Crane unit under something.

Remember though, if the pertronix or crane fails you are walking home, whereas with the original equipment, you can fuss around and quickly get it working again. I am tired of fussing though, and the walk home will probably do me good if it ever comes to it.

I installed the Pertronix Ignitor and their 40KV coil on my 3.5 coupe. Installation was VERY simple and performance flawless.

I went with the Pertronix. Simpler system and I like the stock look. Works great and would highly recommend it.

Pertronix is probably an easier install but they may not have one for your car. You need to call them with the distribtor number to check. They did not have one for my 1971 250C so I went with the Crane XR3000.

1971 250C 114.023 Sadly, it's been sold. I will miss it.
1976 450SEL 116.033 Maybe not so sadly, it's also gone. It was beginning fall apart more than I was willing to put it back together.

I just put pertronix in my 1965 220 coupe. Extremely easy. I emailed Pertronix and got the correct unit based on distributor number and also upgraded my coil. This allowed me to eliminate ALL original coil pieces that could cause me problems later. The car fired on the first try and now its just a matter of dialling in the timing.
Total cost was $140 including coil.

i have used the pertronix on the 74 jeep 5.9L V8 for over 70,000 miles wo any issues, just check after 20 or 30 K to check distributor trueness.... as bearing failure increase wobble.... which would nick the pertronix module....
