Carbureter choke tips

I got a PM about this and thought that since I typed all this others could use the info so here it is:

Joe,
Sorry, been busy. Fuel has nothing to do with the problem. It is a little difficult to explain in print, but I'll try to give you the concepts. There are several basic circuits to any auto carb. The one we are concerned with most when a car has been setting until the engine is cold is the choke circuit. It must perform 3 key functions during starting and warm up. First the choke flap must snap completey shut when you touch the gas pedal. This makes the engine vacuum draw fuel from the carb in its effort to find air to draw in. Once the car starts, engine vacuum must pull the choke flap open slighly by means of a vacuum cell so the engine can get air to run. This is a critical setting and measurement specs are provided by each mfg. Americans call this choke pull off, and Europeans call it pre throttle gap. If this gap is too narrow, the engine will be getting too much fuel for air and will run rich and rough and possibly stall. If the gap is too wide, the engine gets too much air for the fuel and will stall as you try to move the car. The 3rd job of the choke is to open slowly as the car warms up to a full open position and normal warm engine performance. Hope this info is of some help.
