The 3.5's came with a 4 speed automatic.
A rare few came with 4 speed manuals.
I had one on a 3.5 coupe that I converted into a convertible.
It didn't really give the car a more sporty feel.
It was as fulfilling to just "shift" the automatic with its nicely set up shift gate.

I would put in the 4-speed auto. It's a lot easier swap than putting in a manual, adding a clutch and all the linkage, slave cyl, etc. Besides, although I have no problems with a manual transmission, I'll take an auto over it in a Benz anyday. Some sports cars like a Corvette or a Viper make sense with a manual. I just can't see a manual in a luxury sedan.

I just noticed it's a private listing for pre-approved bidders only now... it wasn't that way before, was it? He's probably going to have a friend buy it, claim it fell through and relist it!

That ebay "deal" clearly violates Dog's first 3 rules on Vintage MB ebay purchases:

1) Never spend more than $1200

2) Never buy from dealers.

3) Never enter into blind or private auctions.

And the best bargains always need cosmetic work. Good signs include faded original paint that can be compounded to as-new condition, dusty and dirty interiors and balding tires where tire wear tells condition of the suspension.

For example, here's a superb and honest Benz from what appears to be a reasonable seller with no ulterior motive that meets all of the Dog's criteria for an excellent purchase opportunity: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1959-Mercedes-219-country-tags-parts-or-restoration_W0QQitemZ4633116351QQcategoryZ6329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I'd spend more than $1200, depending on what kind of car it was and what condition it was. But probably not more than $5000 ESPECIALLY without a PPI (by MYSELF).

However, I also would NOT BUY FROM A PRIVATE LISTING and I also would NOT BUY FROM ANYONE who decides to keep their feedback PRIVATE (you can see the score but not the feedback itself). This seller has done BOTH of those.

Make offer

He has a make an offer section. Maybe you should make an offer for $800 and see what he says :-)

Al, I think Tom just offered you $5G for your 6.3 that you said you'd take $7.5 for.

And since we are talking about ebay sales & market value, an interesting comparison Benz can be found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/91393390_W0QQitemZ4632909563QQcategoryZ6329QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The first car is original condition, complete and unmolested 1959 219 with starting price of $50 - advertised for sale as parts car or restoration project. Seller seems to think it will take a genius to put it back on the road, but looks like piece of cake that any of us could easily accomplish.

The second one is immaculate restored 1958 220S with starting price at $10,000 - god only knows what the reserve price is. The car needs absolutely nothing.

Dog's choice says the barnyard 1959 219 is the one to buy. You can see in the pics where I've already peed all over the fender.

How about this one:

"The paint is incredible; a couple chips here and there, but a solid 9 out of 10"

"All the chrome on this car is in spectacular condition. There is only one area where the chrome is beginning to lift (looks like it was caused by bird poop that was allowed to sit too long) on the front driver side under the chrome over rider (pictured below)"
