1954 300 ch.#186.011

Friends,
The car runs out of power at higher speeds.
If one looks into the secondary venturis and opens the throttle while running, a noticable lack of gasoline from the main jets in the secondary is observed. One is also greeted with the characteristic flame in the face of lean backfire. (my eyebrows needed a trim so no big deal, eh?).
I substituted a clear vinyl hose for the fuel pump outlet and a substantial amount of air is transfered by the fuel pump to the carbs. (If you still thought this was a diesel that was your clue.)
As this car has a three way valve for fuel supply, changing the valve setting from normal to reserve still makes no difference.
I highly suspect a suction problem at the fuel pump but am looking for ideas before I disable the vehicle as parts may be scarce.
What do you say boys? and GIRLS

I think you have a leaking fuel line located over tank level. It is just about the only way you can get air through the fuel pump.

Wrong year .. 300d was not in production until 1957.
A 1954/186.011 would be a 300 or 300b.

You sure it is not a 189.011 ?????

i know nothing about these cars, except that the 300d is not a diesel, and that i find them very intreguing, but unless there is something special that karsten knows that i don't it would seem that a leak anywhere between the tank and the pump would introduce air.

The Resesrve Valve may be leaking. I would jumper past it with a hose/fitting and retry.

I agree about the reserve valve. The gaskets shrink with age. I think you can re-seal them. I would hate to think what a NOS one would cost.

My Dad always told me..................

To check the most basic things first.
Like cleaning the fuel filter the restorers neglected to service.
Not to mention the guy who rebuilt the carburetors.
