Install a starter button?
Hi All,
It looks like the tumbler is going on my ignition. Has anybody thought of eliminating the steering lock, making a rocker switch for the electrical system and putting a starter button in place of the ignition tumbler/module? Am I nuts? cheers, dan r. |
Crooks do it all the time .. it is a jumper pak....

Dan, it's probably easier to just replace the tubler. What part number is your ignition set, probably have one (entire ignition + key)

Yeah...I was actually thinking about something a little more elegant than a 'jumper pack.'
Cost isn't really the issue here, I realize they arn't much from the dealership. Just wondering if anybody had planned something like this our or better yet tried it. cheers, dan r. |
We did stick a $15 key switch from Shucks in my brothers Renault R15 and I've a friend that did it to a Healey (sp?) 3000. It has a starter button and the key has the spring return start position. Cheap anti-theft since he hook the horn to the key start position. If you don't know any better, you just keep honking the horn.

i put a starter button in the dash of my 51 caddy hearse. looked like it grew there. but back then a lot of cars had buttons in the dash.
some of the old studies had the button mounted under the clutch pedal and there was a littel metal tab that pushed the starter button when you fully depressed the clutch. worked ok. kindof a primitive clutch interlock like i have electronically on my dodge truck. and my 37 chebby had a big metal pedal on the right side of the gas pedal that you pushed to activate the starter. (we dont need no stinking solinoid) this was handy cause you could just yank the linkage from under the hood while dumping the gas into the carb to insure that you were right there to douse the flames when it backfired. and my 61 bugeye sprite had a pull cable on the dash. (we dont need no stinking solinoid part 2). simple, light, effective. things were a lot more interesting before everyone found out the best way to do things and all did it the same. tom w |
Lotsa cool ideas. I was looking at the fader pot for the radio (just to the right of the 4-way switch on the w201) as a possible switch location. It would be tricky to find a button that slides perfectly into ignition module hole though. Maybe over summer break...
http://www.crxchaos.co.uk/starter-button.html Its kinda funny that everybody knows the 'best' way to do the 'turn on the ignition and start the car' operation, and now they are bored with it, and want to try different stuff. Thanks for the brain-food. cheers, dan r. |
