MB 280 SE Coupe -69 6-cyl Valve adjustment

Hi

I am considering doing the valve adjustment on my M130 myselves.
Being a novice in this game, I thought I would seek advice amongst you experts

So, first, I have noticed a distinct tickety-click sound from the engine. I know they are a bit noisy in the first place, but this one seems to be above average noisy.
Secondly, removing the short, thick air channel between the air-filter and the intake will reveal exhaust comming OUT att idle. This looks strange to me

Thirdly, it lacks the power I would expect from this engine.
There may be many reasons for this, I need to do my timing and CO too, instruments have been ordered.

So, does this valve timing job require special tools?

Again, have patient with a novice....

Learning new things every day

I think you are talking about the hose from the valve cover to the air cleaner. It is not unusual to see a bit of smoke, called "blow by" when it is removed. If it is really pouring out, it indicates piston ring wear.

The valve adustment is not a big deal.

To do it right, you will need a 26mm socket to turn the engine to get the lobes of the cam pointing straight up . Be sure to turn it clockwise. It is much easier to do this with the spark plugs removed. The Mercedes wrench is OK, but a 17mm (?) crowfoot wrench can also be used. Sometimes the adjusters are impossible to turn with a wrench, in which case you will need to remove the rocker arm to get a deep-well socket on the adjuster.

First, thanks for the reply.

No, it's not pouring out, but it's easily noticable.

Is it possible to re-use the valve-cover gasket, or must it be replaced once removed once?

Tom
