OT: This weekend's wrenching (part two)
Apologies for the delayed update on yesterdays work. Yesterday we spent the day pulling the panels off the new P6 to determine how much work needs to be done.
This car is a lot more rusty then the crashed P6 that we parted out. Walking around the car we could see that some of this rust is as a result of accident damage that was not correctly repaired. We can see below that the lip around the wheel arch was creased, this allowed water to run into the back of the rear fender and the trunk by the battery tray and cause rust. Other then the lip, the rear inner wing itself is in great condition. The trunk floor is in good shape with only surface rust inside the trunk. The battery box does need to be rebuilt. The front inner fenders appear to have only surface rust that could possibly be tackled with a wire brush. The outer sills on this car are pretty much rusty on all edges. Although I haven't looked at the floor pan, it would be safe to say that the floor pan is in equally bad shape. The current plan is to cut these panels from the 2000TC that we parted out use them to replace what we have here. We will also use the panels behind the back seats and the trunk floor pan on the 2000TC as floor pans if feasible. These are completely rust free on that car. The valance below the boot lid is also pretty rusty, possibly caused by a bad seal. The one on the 2000TC is in good shape so we will probably make use of that. The next task will be to cut all the necessary parts from the 2000TC before we sent it to the scrap yard. But before we start welding, we need to make sure that we can get this car running. So this will be our next goal. I should have more information for you next week. If we can get the car running and start putting it back together, I will need to get a whole new set of seals (door, trunk, fender and windscreen as well as anywhere else) and a new set of nuts and bolts and fasteners for all the panels that we removed. These have a habit of getting lost in my garage. Does anyone know if these parts are readily available? I would be grateful for any advice given. Thanks for watching.

Well, a lesser man might be intimidated, but I have no doubt that given time, this car will be enviably restored.
I must applaud your attitude and your vision. |
