Help! Transmission info
I found a model G76/27 A-5 5 speed transmission for sale and was wondering if it will fit my 1970 250C. The numbers off of the trans case are: 117 261 07 02, 117 261 12 01, G1, 10BO. The add says it will fit a W111, W107, and has the same mount as a W123. My car currently has a 4 speed which if I remember is a side shift model just like the one shown. The auction ends tomorrow so a speedy reply would be appreciated. I have just replaced the clutch master cylinder and clutch slave and would like to know if these would also work.

Must be the one on Ebay that I also looked at. The bell house has the part number for a 6 cylinder (111 280SE for sure) 5 speed bellhousing. You can go to the EPC website (see useful links) to see whether it matches for your 114 250C.
I am not sure whether the input shaft will fit if it is truely a A style transmission. I doubt it is a true A type because the A transmissions were intended for the V8 engines and given that the bellhousing came with the transmission, it is more likely to be a "regular" 5 speed. Not sure whether an A transmission input shaft would fit yours, or corresponding clutch. Throw out rockers are definitely different for A and regular G76/27. Nevertheless, you can't loose if it is truely an A, because the beast is even rarer and you can always sell it again (call me first!). I really don't know what the going rate is for "regular" 6 cylinder 5 speeds. I just picked up a (spare) complete 4 speed G76/27 A for my 280SE 3.5 coupe for less than $300 including shipping which I thought was a deal. Good luck bidding! |

sjefke, thanks for the info. I tried to find the EPC link but could not see it on the useful links in the vintage section. How would I get to it?

If you click on the 114.023 (250C) link and then on the clutch link, you can see the bellhousing. Looks like it has the same number so that at least "should" fit. There is also a link or 5 speed manual under the transmission. Looks like the casing numbers are different. Don't know what that means (could be simple change of casting suppliers). Don't want to rain on the parade ...
... but unless you have linkage for a five-speed, save your money. The bellhousing will probably work.
I tried this a couple of years ago for my 250C. My goal was to create the ultimate 250C. Bought a transmission and could not get the linkage anywhere. The best dealer parts guy in the world made it his cause and tried to get it from MB, but the assembly is not sold as a unit. On an open checkbook basis, he tried to get the 25 individual parts, but only a few are available, mostly on permanent backorder. I would get up at 4 in the morning and try the european recyclers, no luck. I bought the later Getrag linkage, but it is way different and would not fit or work. All I was able to actually get my hands on was the 5-speed shift knob, which I still have as a souvenir.

For the deep pocket folks, there is a ZF S5-20 top shifter 5 speed transmission for sale on Ebay. Opening bid: $4,500 (you do get a Maserati shifter and bellhousing with it...).

It was the whole shebang. The Haynes manuals for the 2.8 SOHC and DOHC cars have good sections on both 4 and 5 speed transmissions, including side-view drawings of the full setups. The linkage is really different. For example, Reverse on the 4 speed is 5th on the 5 speed. The lever layout is totally different. The rod arrangement is completely different.
It might be possible to cook something up with a 4 speed linkage and some shift rods. I thought about that, but you would have to actually mount the linkage and have the trans in the car. Anything is possible with enough time and money, but it just didn't seem to be worth it to me.

Thanks for all the info, I think I will just stick with what I have. I read in one of the other threads this morning about changing the rear end. That sounds like a much easier route to take.

I am sure the seller does not mind. The final auction price paid by the (initial) bidder was higher than his initial buy it now price...
