What's in Your Carburetor?

I rescued my 280C after a catastrophic engine failure occurred while it was being driven across the Arizona desert in 2001. But that's another story.

Ever since I got it running, it has had cold start/warmup and idle problems. Finding a major intake gasket leak helped a lot, as did learning how to adjust the Solex 4A1 choke pull-down. In 2003, I replaced the Solex with a Holley 4360C as part of a used JAM kit, and that improved the idle but the warm-up problems remained.

About a month a ago, things really went downhill. Progressively worse idle, harder start and miserable warm-up. Checked everything and concluded that it had to be the carb.

Upon dismantling, I discovered a fine sediment in the bottom of the float chamber. Problem is, the main and secondary jets are also in the bottom, so what I suspect is that I started with a dirty carb, and it got progressively worse as the fuel flow was restricted more and more. So I threw all the pieces in a gallon can of carb cleaner to soak overnight, rinsed with water, and blew everything out with 40 psi of air. Reassembled and re-installed. Did not replace any parts or gaskets.

Cranked a few times to fill the chamber, and it started and for the first time ever DID NOT DIE . It literally runs now like a new car. Smoother idle, more power, easier starts.

So I guess the moral of the story for the 250/280 crowd is that it may be something as simple as a dirty carb.

well that is how it is sometimes. i have done full or partial rebuilds on a good few carbs with good results.

then too i have rebuilt the same dam# carb four or five times with no success.

god love fuel injection. as long as it is working correctly.

Also, this should remind us to keep the air filter clean (or to replace it when needed).

Great story, Chuck.
